Gokyo Ri Trek Overview

The Gokyo Ri Trek is one of the most scenic treks in the Everest region of Nepal. It takes you into the beautiful Gokyo Valley, known for its turquoise lakes, high mountain views, and the huge Ngozumpa Glacier. The route also passes through traditional Sherpa villages and quieter parts of the Khumbu region. It is a great choice for trekkers who want to see a different side of the Everest region.

The journey begins on the same trail as the classic Everest Base Camp Trek route, passing through Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar. After Namche, the trail turns toward the Gokyo Valley instead of continuing to Everest Base Camp. The route becomes quieter as you walk through mountain villages, forests, and alpine landscapes. You then reach the Ngozumpa Glacier and the six turquoise Gokyo Lakes, which are part of a Ramsar wetland site.

The main highlight of the trek is the early morning climb to Gokyo Ri at 5,357 meters. From the summit, you get a wide view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The Gokyo Lakes and Ngozumpa Glacier stretch across the valley below. With its peaceful trails, dramatic landscapes, and Sherpa culture, the trek offers a rewarding way to explore the Everest region.

Gokyo Ri Trek Highlights

  • Climb Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) before sunrise and watch the first light fall across Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu from the summit.
  • Explore the Gokyo Lakes, where six turquoise, glacier-fed lakes sit among rocky slopes and snow-covered Himalayan peaks.
  • Walk alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal, crossing rocky moraine while towering Himalayan peaks rise around the Gokyo Valley.
  • Cross the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge over the rushing Dudh Koshi River, with colorful prayer flags swaying above the gorge.
  • Trek beneath the towering walls of Cholatse (6,440 m) and Taboche (6,542 m) as their rocky and icy slopes rise above the trail.
  • Leave the main Everest Base Camp Trek route near Sanasa and follow a quieter trail into the peaceful Gokyo Valley.
  • Experience Sherpa culture in Namche Bazaar and Phortse. Walk past stone houses, hillside farms, monasteries, and busy local teahouses.
  • Walk through the changing landscapes of Sagarmatha National Park, from pine and rhododendron forests to open alpine meadows, while keeping an eye out for Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and Himalayan monal.

Gokyo Ri Trek Itinerary

Flight from Kathmandu/Manthali to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

Your Gokyo Ri Trek begins with a short and scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. From the left side of the plane, you can enjoy views of Gaurishankar, the Langtang range, Dorje Lhakpa, the Everest range, and even the Shishapangma range in China. During the busy seasons, the flight may operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap instead. In that case, you will first drive to Manthali, then take the 20-minute flight to Lukla.

After landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport, you will meet your trekking team at the airport gate. Depending on your flight time, you will have breakfast or lunch in Lukla before a short team meeting. This gives everyone time to check the day’s plan, arrange gear, and get ready for the trail. The walk to Phakding follows the Dudh Koshi River through pine and rhododendron forests.

You will cross small bridges and pass Buddhist prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, and local settlements along the Dudh Koshi River. The trail takes you through Toktok, Benkar, and Monjo, where your Sagarmatha National Park and local area entry permits are checked. After the check, you will then continue to Jorsale and Phakding. You will reach Phakding in the afternoon for your first overnight.

You will pass waterfalls, small farms, and villages such as Benkar before reaching Monjo, the entry point to Sagarmatha National Park. After your permits are checked, the trail continues through pine forests toward Jorsale.

The real climb begins after Jorsale. You will cross the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge and start the steep ascent known as Namche Hill. The climb takes a couple of hours, so keep a steady pace. If the weather is clear, you may get your first glimpse of Mount Everest along the way. Eventually, the trail opens to reveal Namche Bazaar, a busy Sherpa town built into the mountainside. You can also learn about Khumbu Yul Lha, a sacred mountain worshipped by the local Sherpa community.

The hike continues toward Khumjung, a traditional Sherpa village known for its monastery, before reaching Khunde and its regional hospital. You can also visit the Syangboche Yak Farm and Breeding Center before passing Syangboche Airport. On the return to Namche, there is time to visit the Sagarmatha National Park Museum and the local monastery.

Instead of continuing toward Everest Base Camp, you take the quieter trail into the Gokyo Valley. The path includes several uphill and downhill sections as it passes through pine and subtropical forests.

From Sanasa, the trail climbs toward Mong La Pass at 3,957 m before descending to Phortse Tenga at 3,680 m. Prayer flags and a small chorten mark the mountain landscape, while views of Ama Dablam and Khumbila follow you along the trail. After leaving Lhabarma, you continue through the Luja Valley toward Machhermo. The air is thinner now, and the pace naturally becomes slower. By the time you reach Machhermo at 4,470 m, you will be deep in the high-altitude landscape of the Everest region trek. From here, the trail continues toward the first lakes of the Gokyo Lakes system.

After crossing an iron bridge, you reach Longpongo at 4,690 m. Its turquoise water offers your first real glimpse of the lakes ahead. The route then crosses the rocky moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier, one of the longest glaciers in Nepal, with Cholatse (6,440 m) and Taboche rising above the valley as you pick your way across the ice, gravel, and glacial debris.

As you move farther into the valley, more of the Gokyo Lakes come into view. After a while, you finally reach Gokyo Village beside the third lake, Dudh Pokhari. Surrounded by high peaks and turquoise water, it is a memorable place to spend the night.

An early start takes you from Gokyo Village toward Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), the highest point of the trek. The trail climbs steadily over rough and rocky ground, and the thin air makes the short distance feel harder than expected. As you gain elevation, the Gokyo Lakes and Ngozumpa Glacier gradually spread out below you, while the surrounding peaks grow larger.

The effort pays off at the summit. From Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), you get a wide 360-degree view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, along with the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and the surrounding glaciers. After spending time at the viewpoint, you will descend to Gokyo Village. The rest of the day is kept easy so your body can recover and continue adjusting to the altitude.

As you move lower, the trail gradually brings back more vegetation, including pine forests and rhododendron groves. Familiar chortens, stupas, and prayer flags appear along the route.

The long descent eventually brings you toward Phortse Village, a traditional Sherpa settlement built across the hillside. The village is surrounded by terraced fields and is well known for its strong mountaineering culture. After several days at high altitude, reaching 3,840 m also brings noticeably thicker and warmer air. You can relax in the village and enjoy a quieter evening before returning to Namche.

As you lose elevation, the landscape becomes greener, and the air feels easier to breathe. You will reconnect with the main Everest trekking route and continue toward Namche Bazaar. Along the way, you will exit Sagarmatha National Park and pass through familiar villages including Monjo, Jorsale, Phakding, and Benkar. Suspension bridges, stone walls, stupas, and terraced fields fill the route as the high mountains slowly begin to feel more distant.

After Phakding, the trail becomes gentler for a while, giving your legs a break after the long descent. The surrounding landscape also becomes greener as you return toward the lower part of the Khumbu region. You will continue crossing the Dudh Koshi and walking through the villages and forests that marked the beginning of your Gokyo Lakes trek.

There is still one final stretch before the trek is complete. The trail climbs steadily toward Lukla, and after 8-9 hours on your feet, the final kilometers can feel surprisingly long. Reaching Lukla at 2,860 m brings a strong sense of relief. After checking into your teahouse, you can rest, thank your guides and porters, and enjoy your final evening in the mountains.

Why Choose the Gokyo Ri Trek?

The Gokyo Ri Trek offers a different way to experience the Everest region. The route combines high mountain views, turquoise glacial lakes, the huge Ngozumpa Glacier, and traditional Sherpa villages. It also takes you away from the busier parts of the main Everest Base Camp trail and into the quieter Gokyo Valley.

Views of Everest and Other Himalayan Giants

One of the biggest highlights is the climb to Gokyo Ri (5,357 meters). From the summit, you can enjoy a wide 360-degree view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. You can also see the Gokyo Lakes and Ngozumpa Glacier spread across the valley below. The open view gives you a clear look at Everest and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Ngozumpa Glacier and the High Himalayan Landscape

The trail takes you deep into the high Himalayan landscape as you move toward Gokyo. You will walk alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal, and cross its rocky moraine. The scenery changes from green forests and meadows to bare rocks, glaciers, and snow-covered peaks. This change in landscape is one of the most memorable parts of the Gokyo Valley trek.

Explore the Gokyo Lakes

The Gokyo Lakes are at the heart of this trek. The group includes six glacier-fed lakes with bright turquoise water. They sit high in the mountains, surrounded by rocky slopes and snowy peaks. Gokyo village is located beside the third lake, Dudh Pokhari, giving you the chance to stay close to the lakes during the trek.

Why Are the Gokyo Lakes So Special?

The Gokyo Lakes are more than a beautiful stop on the trail. They form one of the world’s highest freshwater lake systems and are part of a Ramsar wetland site. Both Hindus and Buddhists consider the lakes sacred. Their bright turquoise color, high mountain setting, and surrounding glaciers make them one of the most distinctive features of the Gokyo Valley.

A Different Experience From Everest Base Camp

The trek starts along the same route as the Everest Base Camp Trek, then turns toward the Gokyo Valley near Sanasa. Once you leave the main trail, the route becomes quieter. You pass through Sherpa villages, alpine meadows, and open mountain landscapes with fewer trekkers around you. The slower pace and peaceful setting give you more time to enjoy the scenery and mountain villages along the way.

A Strong Alternative to Everest Base Camp

Gokyo Ri is a strong alternative for trekkers who want the beauty of the Everest region without making Everest Base Camp the main destination. Instead of ending at Base Camp, the trek focuses on Gokyo Ri, Gokyo Lakes, and Ngozumpa Glacier. You still experience the famous Khumbu region, including Namche Bazaar, suspension bridges, yak caravans, and Sherpa culture. At the same time, the route offers a different view of Everest and a quieter high-altitude experience.

What Is the Gokyo Ri Trek Experience Really Like?

The Gokyo Ri Trek starts through green forests, suspension bridges, and Sherpa villages with an acclimatization day at Namche. The trail then turns toward the quieter Gokyo Valley near Sanasa. As you climb higher, the trees become fewer and the landscape more open and rocky. By Machhermo and Gokyo, the air is colder and thinner, while the Ngozumpa Glacier, turquoise lakes, and snowy peaks become part of the scenery.

Gokyo Ri Trek

The early morning climb to Gokyo Ri at 5,357 meters is the toughest part for many trekkers. You leave around 4:00 AM while it is still dark and climb a steep, loose trail toward the summit. The thin air makes the climb feel harder than the distance suggests, so a slow and steady pace works best. Once you reach the top, the effort pays off with views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, along with the Gokyo Lakes and glacier below.

The return journey feels easier as you lose altitude and get more oxygen. From Gokyo, the trail follows a quieter route to Phortse, with views of Ama Dablam and Cholatse along the way, before reconnecting with the main trail toward Namche Bazaar. The final walk to Lukla is long but rewarding, especially knowing the trek is almost over.

Overall, the trek mixes comfortable village walks, demanding high-altitude sections, and some of the best mountain scenery in the Everest region.

What Is the Best Time of Year for the Gokyo Ri Trek?

The best time to trek the Gokyo Ri is spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). Both seasons give you better weather and clearer mountain views, but they feel quite different on the trail. Spring is great if you want blooming forests and a little more color, while autumn usually wins for clear skies and sharp Himalayan views.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is a great time to walk the lower parts of the route. The rhododendron and oak forests start coming alive, with rhododendrons blooming in red, pink, and white. Daytime temperatures are generally comfortable for trekking, although it is still properly cold once you get higher up.

One interesting thing about spring is seeing the Gokyo Lakes change as the winter ice melts. The lakes gradually open up and return to their familiar turquoise color. For Gokyo Ri itself, mornings are usually your best bet for clear views before clouds start building later in the day.

Autumn (September to November)

If clear mountain views are your priority, autumn is hard to beat. After the monsoon, the air is much cleaner, and on a good morning you can get incredibly sharp views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu from Gokyo Ri. The weather is also generally dry and stable, which makes the higher sections more comfortable to tackle.

The trade-off is that autumn is the busiest season. You will see more trekkers on the trail and more activity in the teahouses. By November, temperatures drop quickly, especially at night around Gokyo and during the early-morning climb to Gokyo Ri.

Off-Season (Winter and Monsoon)

Trekking is still possible outside the main seasons, but the conditions can make the experience quite different:

  • Winter (December to February): The trails are much quieter, and clear days can offer excellent mountain views. However, temperatures can drop well below freezing around Gokyo, while snow can make the Gokyo Ri climb and Ngozumpa Glacier more difficult. Some teahouses in Gokyo may also close during winter, so accommodation and food options can be limited.
  • Monsoon (June to August): Rain, fog, and cloud cover can limit mountain views, while lower trails become wet and slippery. Leeches may also appear in the forested sections. Flights to and from Lukla are more prone to weather-related delays and cancellations, so you will need more flexibility in your itinerary.

How difficult is the Gokyo Ri trek?

The Gokyo Ri Trek difficulty is graded Moderate to Challenging. It is not a technical climb, but the combination of steep trails, long walking days, and high altitude makes it demanding. The trail starts with easier paths through forests and villages before becoming rockier and more rugged as you enter the high Gokyo Valley.

The main challenge comes as you gain altitude. You start trekking from Lukla at 2,860 meters and gradually reach Gokyo Village at 4,750 meters, with Gokyo Ri at 5,357 meters as the highest point. Most trekking days take around 4-7 hours, although some return days are longer. The early-morning climb to Gokyo Ri is the toughest section, as the steep trail feels harder in the thin mountain air.

The itinerary includes acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Gokyo, so you have time to adjust before reaching the highest elevations. With good preparation, a steady pace, and proper acclimatization, the trek is challenging but achievable for fit trekkers.

Is Gokyo Ri harder than Everest Base Camp?

Not by elevation. Kala Patthar, the viewpoint trekkers climb on the EBC trek, tops out at 5,545 m, higher than Gokyo Ri’s 5,357 m. What makes Gokyo Ri feel demanding is the steep, loose trail and the fact that the climb happens right after a long trekking day, rather than the altitude alone. Overall, the two treks are comparable in difficulty; neither is dramatically harder than the other.

What is the risk of altitude sickness on the Gokyo Ri Trek?

Altitude sickness is one of the main risks on the trek to Gokyo Ri because you spend several nights above 4,000 meters and climb above 5,000 meters. Headache, tiredness, dizziness, and nausea can be early signs. The itinerary’s gradual ascent and acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Gokyo help reduce the risk, but they cannot remove it completely. Stay hydrated, walk at a steady pace, and tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell.

Looking for an Easier Everest Trek?

If the Gokyo Trek feels too challenging, explore alternative Everest treks that offer incredible Himalayan views with different difficulty levels.

How to Prepare for the Gokyo Ri Trek?

The best way to prepare for the Gokyo Ri Trek is to get used to walking for several hours, especially on uphill and downhill trails. Start training around 8-12 weeks before your trek and increase the effort gradually. A simple training routine can include:

  • Build your stamina: Include brisk walking, running, cycling, or swimming to improve your overall endurance.
  • Strengthen your legs: Use stair climbing, squats, lunges, and step-ups to prepare for the steep sections.
  • Practice longer hikes: Take weekend hikes and gradually increase the distance. Adding back-to-back hiking days can also help you get used to consecutive days on the trail.
  • Get used to carrying a daypack: Practice hiking with around 5-7 kg. A porter will carry your main luggage.

Along with training, take care of a few practical things before you leave. Break in your trekking boots to avoid blisters, prepare your gear early, and learn the basic signs of altitude sickness. Also check that your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation.

How fit do I need to be for the Gokyo Ri trek?

You should be able to walk for 5-7 hours a day on hilly terrain for several days in a row. You don’t need previous mountaineering experience, but you should be comfortable with regular hiking and long uphill climbs, especially around Namche Hill, the Ngozumpa Glacier moraine, and the Gokyo Ri climb.

Do You Need a Guide for the Gokyo Ri Trek?

Since 2023, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality has maintained a local exception allowing solo foreign trekkers to enter without a guide, using its own trek-card system. However, this sits in tension with Nepal’s national April 2023 guide mandate, and checkpoint enforcement has been inconsistent through 2026. Some trekkers report being asked for a guide regardless of the local exception. Because the rule is unsettled, HC Treks strongly recommends booking with a licensed guide regardless of the legal minimum, both for compliance certainty at checkpoints and for the safety value described below.

Why Trek With a Local Guide?

  • Altitude and safety: Monitor your condition as you gain elevation and recognize early signs of altitude sickness.
  • Trail navigation: Guide you through rocky sections, glacial terrain, and the climb to Gokyo Ri.
  • Accommodation and logistics: Help arrange teahouses, meals, permits, and transport along the route.
  • Local culture: Share insights into Sherpa traditions, Buddhist practices, monasteries, and mountain communities.
  • Emergency support: Help communicate with local services and arrange assistance if you become sick or injured.

When Gokyo Stole Our Hearts and Filled Our Cameras

When we signed up for this trek two couples looking for adventure, we thought we knew what to expect. Wow, were we wrong! The Gokyo region completely stole our hearts with landscapes so stunning, we must have taken a thousand photos (seriously, we ran out of memory cards!). But what made it truly special was how everything worked like clockwork, from the warm airport pickup to that emotional final night's dinner.

Our guides were absolute rockstars, one of our group had some altitude issues, and they handled it with such calm expertise we never felt worried. They knew exactly when to push on and when to take it slow, and still managed to keep the whole experience fun, which isn't easy at 15,000 feet! If you're looking for an adventure that's equal parts breathtaking and well-oiled, this is it.

A Journey to Gokyo Ri with HC Treks

HC Treks made this feel like a journey, not just a tour. Our guide, Tashi, had this calm energy that made everyone feel safe and motivated. I was in a group with three others from the UK, and we quickly clicked. Gokyo Ri was the highlight. I literally cried when I saw Everest and the lakes beneath me. The experience gave me perspective I didn’t know I needed.

The Breathtaking Views from Gokyo Ri Summit

When I was planning my trek, I had a tough choice between the classic Everest Base Camp trail and the Gokyo Lakes route. But let me tell you, picking Gokyo was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! I’d heard whispers that it was less crowded, and boy, were they right! The moment I hit the trail, I felt this incredible sense of peace wash over me. The stunning turquoise lakes? Absolutely breathtaking! Seriously, they look like something straight out of a postcard.

Now, let’s talk about the view from Gokyo Ri. I mean, wow! Standing up there, gazing at the majestic peaks, I couldn’t help but think it rivals, if not beats, the view from Everest Base Camp. It’s like you’re on top of the world, soaking in nature’s beauty without the hustle and bustle of the more popular trails. And trust me, that feeling is priceless.I can’t say enough good things about HC Treks, either. They were super professional but also felt like friends. They made sure I was safe, acclimatized, and genuinely enjoyed every moment of the trek. It’s not just about reaching the destination; it’s about the journey, and they nailed it! If you’re looking for an adventure that’s off the beaten path, Gokyo is where it’s at!

Journey Through the Stunning Gokyo Lakes

We were a small group of 5 strangers on Day 1, friends by the end. The trek itself was absolutely stunning (Gokyo Lakes are unreal), but the team dynamics made it even better. HC Treks organized everything so well, and our guide was a legend, patient, funny, and full of interesting info. The lodges were cozy, food was great, and the altitude pacing was just right.

A fantastic and memorable experience that I would like to repeat in the not too distant future. My friend Kulvinder and I had discussed some time ago about doing a trek in Nepal. The lure of majestic mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and varied scenery finally drew us, along with another friend, Binesh, to embark on the Annapurna Trek with Tilicho Lake with Himalayan Challenge Treks. From the moment we were collected at the airport by our guide Chatur Man Tarang, to the end of the trek, we were not only provided with useful advice and information, but Chatur also infused the trek with his own special brand of humour. The two porters, 'Ashish' and 'Rajan', quickly became friends and helped fill in the quiet evenings by joining in a few games of Dhumble. The treks were challenging for us, 65+ year olds. Still, Chatur and the porters were always encouraging and provided helpful advice on how to deal with the various challenges of walking up and down safely, dealing with the low oxygen air at altitude, staying safe in rockfall areas, and dealing with the incoming traffic of ponies and local residents carrying bulky goods from one place to another. The locations were absolutely stunning and the local rambling through villages, visiting the Buddhist Stupas and Gumbas and enjoying the hospitality of the tea houses along the trek routes remains truly memorable. I hope to return sometime soon to pick up where we left this trek.

Day walk with Shirish Some time ago my wife and I did a short day walk with Shirish Tuladhar of Himalayan Challenge Treks and enjoyed the day immensely. We were in Katmandu for only about a week and so had no time for a multi-day trek. Shirish was a great guide and very patient (as I was recovering from surgery and moving rather slowly.) This was pre-Covid, while we were living in Malaysia, but while moving back to the US/EU I found Shirish's card and wanted to commend him and HCT. +David+

Fantastic Tailor Made Honeymoon After establishing an excellent connection with Shirish online, we worked to put together a bespoke itinerary which was absolutely perfect for what we wanted on our honeymoon. Shirish and his team (Ram and Raju) delivered a trip which far exceeded our expectations. Their local expertise provided a personal touch to our trip which made it incredibly special and unique. I thoroughly recommend Nepal as it has so much to offer visitors. We experienced white water rafting, trekking in the Annapurna foothills, sunrises over snow topped mountains, paragliding over Pokhara, safari in Chitwan, the history and culture of Kathmandu and much, much more. The Nepalese people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I put my trust in Shirish and his team and they delivered something professional, personal and so wonderfully memorable that the trip to Nepal will always have a very special place in our hearts.

What Permits Are Needed for the Gokyo Ri Trek?

The Gokyo Ri Trek requires permits to enter Sagarmatha National Park and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality. We include them in our trek package. You do not need to arrange them yourself. Just bring your original passport, two photocopies, and four passport-sized photos.

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

This permit gives you entry to Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects the forests, wildlife, glaciers, and mountain landscapes of the Everest region. You can obtain it from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or at the Monjo checkpoint before entering the park.

The current entry fees are:

  • Foreign nationals: NPR 3,000 per person
  • SAARC nationals: NPR 1,500 per person
  • Nepali citizens: NPR 100 per person
  • Children under 10: Free

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit is a local entry permit that supports tourism and development in the Khumbu region. You can’t get it in Kathmandu; it’s issued only at designated local counters in Lukla or Monjo.

The current fees are:

  • Foreign nationals: NPR 3,000 per person (about USD 23)
  • SAARC nationals: NPR 2,000 per person (about USD 15)
  • Nepali citizens: NPR 500 per person

What Food and Accommodation Are Available on the Gokyo Ri Trek Route?

The Gokyo Ri Trek uses mountain teahouses and lodges for accommodation, with most nights spent in simple twin-sharing rooms. Lodges also serve food, with a mix of Nepali, Sherpa, Tibetan, and familiar Western dishes. As you climb higher, choices become more limited, and prices generally increase because supplies have to be transported into the upper valley.

Accommodation

Type/Option Facilities Price Range
Standard Teahouse Room Twin beds, basic mattresses, blankets, and shared bathrooms. Heating is usually available in the dining area, not inside the rooms. Around $5-15 per room
Room with Attached Bathroom Private bathroom and basic room facilities. More commonly available in Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar than at higher elevations. Around $20-40 per room
Higher-Altitude Teahouses Basic rooms with shared facilities. Options become more limited around Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo. Varies by lodge and season
Gokyo Lodge/Resort Options Some lodges around Gokyo Village offer more comfortable rooms and additional facilities, depending on availability. Varies

Hot showers, Wi-Fi, and device charging are generally available for an additional fee, particularly at higher elevations. Facilities become more basic as you approach Gokyo, so it is better to think of the teahouses as comfortable mountain shelters rather than hotels.

Food

Meal Type Typical Options Price Range
Breakfast Porridge, muesli, eggs, Tibetan bread, chapati, pancakes, toast, and tea or coffee Around $4-8
Lunch & Dinner Dal bhat, momos, thukpa, Sherpa stew, noodles, pasta, fried rice, and vegetable dishes Around $6-15
Snacks Tibetan bread, pancakes, boiled eggs, chocolate, biscuits, and other packaged snacks Around $2-6
Drinks Ginger-lemon-honey tea, milk tea, hot chocolate, coffee, bottled water, and soft drinks Around $1.50-5

You will find more variety in Lukla and Namche, while menus become simpler around Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo Village.

How much does the Gokyo Ri trek cost?

The 11-day Gokyo Ri Trek with HC Treks starts at $2,245 per person for solo travelers, currently discounted from the standard $2,500. Trek costs, including guides, porters, and transport, are shared among the group. So, your final price mainly depends on how many people you are trekking with. Here is how the per-person rate breaks down by group size:

  • 1 Person (Solo): $2,245
  • 2-3 People: $1,630
  • 4-7 People: $1,440
  • 8-10 People: $1,395
  • 11-15 People: Contact us for a custom group rate

Beyond group size, a few other factors can affect your total cost. Traveling during spring or autumn, the two main trekking seasons, can affect flight and teahouse availability and pricing. Optional services, such as extra nights in Kathmandu, will also add to the total. Personal expenses such as hot showers, Wi-Fi, and battery charging during the trek depend on your own use.

So, what does the trek price actually cover? The package includes the main services you need during the trek:

  • Domestic flights and transportation
  • Meals during the trek
  • Trekking permits
  • Guide and porter services
  • Staff costs and other services listed under our Gokyo Ri Trek Package Inclusions

Some costs fall outside the package and need to be covered separately. These include international flights, Nepal tourist visa fees, travel insurance, Kathmandu accommodation, guide and porter tips, and personal expenses. Optional add-ons, such as extra nights in Kathmandu, are also available at an additional cost.

Pricing Notes: The rates above are current pricing guides and may change based on your travel dates, availability, and flight costs. Contact HC Treks for the latest pricing and available options when you’re ready to book.

Gokyo Ri Trek vs Everest Base Camp Trek

Both treks take you into the Everest region, but they offer different experiences. The Gokyo Ri Trek focuses on turquoise glacial lakes, the Ngozumpa Glacier, and wide Himalayan views, while the Everest Base Camp Trek takes you to the famous base camp and along the classic route through the Khumbu Valley.

Feature Gokyo Ri Trek Everest Base Camp Trek
Main highlight Gokyo Ri and the six Gokyo Lakes Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar
Highest point 5,357 m at Gokyo Ri 5,545 m at Kala Patthar
Everest views Wide views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu Excellent views of Everest and surrounding peaks
Scenery Turquoise lakes, Ngozumpa Glacier, and alpine valleys Khumbu Glacier, moraines, valleys, and mountain villages
Trail experience Generally quieter and less crowded Generally busier, especially in peak seasons

Who Should Choose Gokyo Ri?

  • Nature lovers who want to explore glacial lakes, glaciers, and alpine landscapes.
  • Photographers looking for turquoise lakes and wide views of Everest and other Himalayan peaks.
  • Trekkers seeking a quieter experience away from the busier EBC trail.
  • Returning trekkers who want to explore a different side of the Khumbu.

The trek is especially rewarding if Gokyo Lakes, the Ngozumpa Glacier, and panoramic mountain views appeal to you more than reaching Everest Base Camp itself.

Who Should Choose Everest Base Camp?

  • First-time Everest-region trekkers who want to experience the classic route.
  • Mountaineering enthusiasts interested in Everest’s climbing history and the Khumbu’s expedition culture.
  • Bucket-list travelers whose main goal is to stand at Everest Base Camp.
  • Trekkers who want the classic Khumbu experience, including the traditional route through places such as Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche.

EBC makes more sense if reaching Everest Base Camp and experiencing Everest’s mountaineering history matter more to you than exploring the Gokyo Valley and its lakes.

Can You Combine Gokyo Ri with Everest Base Camp?

Yes, you can combine both routes by crossing the Cho La Pass (5,420 m). The route takes you through the Gokyo Valley before joining the main Everest Base Camp trail. This lets you experience the Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar in one trek.

HC Treks offers several itineraries that combine the Gokyo Valley with the Everest Base Camp route:

  • Everest Base Camp Trek Via Gokyo Lake – 15 Days: Everest Base Camp Trek Via Gokyo Lake has a dedicated itinerary that combines Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp.
  • Everest High Passes Trek – 15 Days: Everest High Passes Trek has a longer route that typically combines Gokyo with high-pass crossings and Everest Base Camp.
  • Everest Three Passes Trek – 17 Days: Everest Three Passes Trek is the most comprehensive option, covering Gokyo, Everest Base Camp, and all three high passes.

The high-altitude pass crossings make these combined routes more demanding than the standard Gokyo Ri Trek, so they are best suited to experienced and well-prepared trekkers.
