The conservation area is inhabited by 105 species of mammals, 40 reptiles, 23 amphibians, 518 birds, and 1,2226 flowering plants. You will get an opportunity to witness the diverse flora and fauna. You may also catch sightings of rare wildlife species, such as red panda, Himalayan Tahr, musk deer, Himalayan monals, or any others.
The Thorong La Pass is one of the iconic high mountain passes in Nepal. At 5416 m, it offers stunning views of mountain panoramas and landscapes. The Thorong La Pass connects the Manang Valley to Muktinath and Kali Gandaki Valley. Climbing to the top of the mountain pass is challenging but also rewarding. The demanding trail requires trekkers to make steep climbs on rough and rocky terrains and descend on loose gravel paths. They must also face strong winds and unpredictable weather. Colorful prayer flags, mani walls, and cairns adorn the top of the mountain pass.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is not just an adventure but also a cultural tour. The trekking trails take you through the beautiful traditional settlements of Gurung, Magar, Thakali, Manangi, and Tibetan ethnic communities. Each ethnic community has its own distinct culture and traditions. During the journey, you will stay at basic but cozy accommodations run by the locals. You will get to experience the warm hospitality and try local delicacies. It offers a window to glimpse their rich culture, customs, and lifestyle. You will also pass by many ancient monasteries, gompas, and temples, where you can have a spiritual experience. The trek allows you to immerse in the unique culture and gain insights.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is one of the toughest treks in Nepal. The journey starts gently from Jagat, following the Marsyangdi River through green valleys. Early sections between Chamche and Dharapani involve steady uphill climbs along forested, humid trails with steep stone steps, waterfalls, and suspension bridges. By the time you reach Chame and Pisang, the trail becomes more alpine, with narrower, windier paths and steeper climbs. From Pisang to Manang, the air gets thinner, and trekkers face rugged, exposed trails that test both stamina and acclimatization.
After Manang, the trek becomes even harder. The side trail to Tilicho Base Camp has narrow, gravelly paths along cliffs, requiring balance and careful steps. The final climb to Tilicho Lake (4,920 m) is short but very steep, with icy winds and loose rocks making each step slow and tiring. Returning toward Siri Kharka, Yak Kharka, and Ledar, you walk through a high-altitude desert where mornings are frigid, the air is thin, and the terrain is barren.
The biggest challenge is the ascent to Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), the highest point of the trek. You will start before dawn to avoid strong winds and climb steep, rocky slopes where oxygen is low. The trail is icy, exposed, and long, thus it makes each step feel difficult. Overall, this trek is challenging because of its long duration, steep climbs, high altitude, and extreme weather. With good physical fitness, mental strength, and preparation, it offers one of the most memorable experiences in the Himalayas.
The weather and climatic conditions vary significantly depending on the season. There are four seasons in Nepal. Each season has its unique characteristics and charm. Here is a brief on all four seasons for your Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake:

The bright and sunny weather of spring makes it one of the best times for the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake. The days are longer and clearer, and the temperature is moderate during this time of the year. It is an active time for flora and fauna. Hence, you can witness the entire rhododendron forest bloom in various colors of red, pink, and white. You can also witness various other colorful wildflowers in full bloom. You may also catch sight of some rare wildlife species.
During spring, there is very low rainfall except for occasional rain showers. The average temperature in lower regions ranges from 5 to 20°C. Meanwhile, the temperature at higher elevations ranges between 0 to 8°C. The nighttime temperature can drop slightly. Similarly, the visibility is brilliant in spring. Trekkers can enjoy clear mountain panoramas throughout the trek and the vibrant landscapes of the Annapurna region.
Summer is the off-season for trekking in Nepal. It is not an ideal time for the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake. The summer season coincides with the monsoon. It means there is heavy rainfall in most of the hilly lower regions of Nepal. The rain makes the forest trails wet, muddy, and slippery. Leeches also infest the trails.
But the rain also cleanses the surroundings. It leaves the vegetation green and luscious. The heavy rain clouds obstruct the views, and the visibility is extremely poor during summer. There is also a high chance of flights getting delayed or canceled. The temperature ranges around 25°C. The hot and humid temperature, poor visibility, and uncomfortable trekking conditions make summer unsuitable for trekking.
Autumn is the most favorable and ideal time for the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake. It has the best weather and climatic conditions for trekking. The days are bright, sunny, and clear. The weather is stable, and the temperature is moderate. Moreover, the air is crisp, and the autumn foliage adds to the beauty of the already vibrant landscapes. The rain from the previous season leaves the vegetation clean and fresh.
The average temperature during autumn ranges between 4 and 20°C. However, the nights and mornings are chilly. At the end of autumn, pre-winter enters Nepal, and the temperature drops further. Visibility is excellent at this time of year. Therefore, it is the best time to witness the breathtaking mountain panoramas of the Annapurna region. It is also a festive season as Dashain and Tihar fall at this time. You can enjoy the best weather, stunning views, and festive atmosphere while trekking in autumn.
Winter is also an off-season for trekking, but it is doable. The temperature plunges, becoming extremely cold in higher regions. It also snows heavily, covering entire landscapes. There can also be occasional snow blizzards. The days are usually warm, but the temperature at nighttime in higher areas can drop below 15°C. Winter is the best time to enjoy the snowy landscapes of the Annapurna region and the snow-covered peaks.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is possible during winter but requires extreme preparation and gear. There are very few trekkers on the trails, so one can enjoy a quiet trekking experience. However, the snowy trails and cold weather add to the challenge of the already strenuous trek. Trekking in winter is only recommended for seasoned trekkers.
The standard accommodations along the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake are teahouses, lodges, and guesthouses. You will not find luxurious hotels or resorts, especially as you gain elevation. These accommodations are basic and offer only limited facilities. They usually have dormitory rooms or are on a sharing basis. Similarly, the bathrooms are generally communal and at the end of the hall.
The accommodations provide beds, pillows, and blankets, but the rooms are poorly insulated. It is best to carry a sleeping bag to stay warm at night. The only heating facility is in the communal dining space, with a massive stove at the center of the dining hall. These accommodations are affordable, usually charging NPR 200 for a room. However, you must pay additional costs for services like Wi-Fi, hot showers/ water, charging electronic devices, etc.

These accommodations also provide meals. You can find a variety of local Nepalese cuisines as well as international. The most readily available meal during the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is Dal Bhat, a staple Nepalese cuisine. It includes rice, lentil soup, vegetables, curry, pickles, and salad. Other available menus include momo (dumpling), chow mein, thukpa, cornflakes, oatmeal, Tsampa, porridge, noodles, Tibetan bread, roti, curries, sandwiches, soups, pasta, stews, spaghetti, and more.
Annapurna Circuit with trek to Tilicho Lake is a demanding trek. It requires adequate preparation to tackle challenging terrains, high altitudes, and unpredictable weather. Trekkers must prepare physically and mentally for the journey.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake covers a distance of approximately 260 km. Each day of the trek, trekkers must hike for 4 to 6 hours on average. The trails require trekkers to ascend and descend on steep, narrow trails on varied terrains. It is physically strenuous, so one must exercise and train to build strength and endurance for the journey. The best exercise that trekkers can undertake is cardiovascular, strength-building, and endurance-building training. Exercises such as running, jogging, cycling, hiking, swimming, and brisk walking are most beneficial. One can also hire a personal trainer and join a gym. Similarly, trekkers can join aerobic classes, altitude stimulation, or hiking-specific training.
Mental preparation is as important as physical preparation. The remote location, lack of infrastructure, and challenges can mentally stress trekkers. The best way to mentally prepare for the trip is to research the journey and familiarize yourself with the possible challenges. Understanding the difficulties allows trekkers to prepare themselves better. Also, prepare for unforeseen events such as sudden weather changes, rains, altitude sickness, etc. It requires a positive mindset and great mental resilience to undertake the trek. Mental preparation is also crucial for completing the journey successfully.
Always purify your drinking water using boiled water, filters, tablets, or UV devices because tap and stream water are unsafe. Hot showers are available in lower villages for a fee, but are limited or absent near Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong Phedi. At high altitudes, rely on wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and a quick-dry towel. Laundry services exist in some villages, but clothes dry slowly in cold air, so wash only small items and use biodegradable soap.
Most trekkers on the 17-day Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake can get a Nepal visa on arrival. The 30-day visa is the best choice because it covers the trek, travel days, and any delays. The fee is USD 50, paid in cash, with USD being the easiest option. Indian citizens do not need a visa, while a few nationalities must apply in advance through a Nepalese embassy.
Travel insurance is essential for the trek because the route reaches extreme heights, including Tilicho Lake near 5,000 m and Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m. Your policy must clearly cover trekking up to at least 5,500 m and include helicopter evacuation, which can cost over USD 10,000 without insurance. It should also cover medical treatment, hospital stays, and repatriation.
Hiring a licensed guide is now mandatory under Nepal’s 2024 rule that bans solo trekking in protected areas. Guides handle navigation, safety, first-aid, and teahouse bookings, which are vital during busy seasons. Porters carry your main bag up to 15 kg so you can walk with a light daypack. Their support makes the long, high-altitude journey safer and smoother.
