Nepal has returned to normal after the recent protests. Book your trek with confidence.
The Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the official currency of Nepal, abbreviated as Rs or NPR. Carrying cash is the easiest and most common mode of payment in Nepal. The banknotes in the country come in denominations of 1, 2, 5,10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000. You can easily exchange your currency at authorized money exchange centers, which are available in most parts of Kathmandu and other city areas. Likewise, ATMs are easily available in cities but are rare in remote areas. Thus, if you are traveling in a remote location, consider carrying cash instead of depending on your ATM card. Mobile apps like eSewa, Khalti, and IME pay are popular in most places for bill paying, but foreigners may not be able to use the apps unless they have a Nepali SIM card. However, hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops in urban areas accept Debit/Credit cards with a 3-4% surcharge. Additionally, we recommend you inform your bank about your travel schedules in order to avoid card blocks. Similarly, keep emergency cash in hand in case of an ATM issue.
