Day 1 | Drive from Pokhara to Kimche / Ghandruk (1940 m / 6,364 ft). Trek from Ghandruk to Tadapani (2,700 m/8,860 ft)

Our trek begins in Pokhara, so you must first travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara. You can either take a flight or drive to Pokhara and stay overnight at a hotel in the city. Then, the next day, you will start your Khopda Danda Trek.

After breakfast, you will get on a jeep and drive towards Nayapul. From here, the road becomes off-road, passing by small villages, bazaars, and terrace farms. We will also drive by Kimche and reach the picturesque Gurung village of Ghandruk. In Ghandruk, many traditional houses with slate/ stone roofs can be seen. Likewise, there are many Buddhist monasteries. We will start our trek to Tadapani from here.

The trail from Ghandruk gradually ascends through dense rhododendron groves. We will pass by several waterfalls and small streams along the way. As we climb higher, the mountain views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, and Lamjung Himal become clearer and closer. Finally, we will reach Tadapani, where we will stay overnight.

Day 2 | Trek from Tadapani (2,700 m/8,860 ft) to Bayeli Kharka (3,450m / 11,318ft)

We will have breakfast in the serene atmosphere of Tadapani before resuming our trek. The trail continues to ascend through dense subtropical forests. En route, we will also come across local water buffalo pastures. The stunning Annapurna range keeps us accompanied throughout the trek. As we continue ascending, we will come across a small pass that goes through rhododendron grooves. After crossing the groove, we will reach a clearing and the village of Bayli Kharka. The village offers a gorgeous view of Mount Dhaulagiri. We will stay overnight at a lodge in Bayli Kharka.

Day 3 | Trek from Bayli Kharka (3,450m/ 11,318ft) to Khopra Danda (Ridge) (3,660m / 11,811ft)

On this day, we will leave Bayli Kharka and begin our uphill climb to Khopra Danda. The trail ascends through dense forests and passes by the Chistibang pastures. It takes another two hours to ascend from the pastures through conifer forests to reach Khopra Danda. Upon reaching the danda, the grand view of Mount Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Damphus, Tukuche Peak, and more will greet you. Similarly, you can also witness the world’s deepest gorge, the Kaligandaki Gorge, and the stunning landscapes from here. We will rest our tired feet at an accommodation in Khopra Danda.

Day 4 | Trek from Khopra Danda (Ridge) (3,660m / 11,811ft) to Swanta (2,214m / 7,874ft)

We will have our breakfast before resuming our journey. The holy Khayar Lake (4665 m) lies close to Khopra Ridge and takes around 5 hours to reach. The lake has huge religious significance to Hindus. They believe they can attain Nirvana or Moksha (liberation from the life and death cycle) by dipping in the lake. You will begin descending downhill from the lake through the subtropical forests to Swanta. We will stay here overnight. The beautiful village of Swanta is famous for its community cheese factory. Upon reaching the village, you can visit the factory and try the local cheese. Likewise, you can explore around Swanta.

Day 5 | Trek from Swanta (2,214m / 7,874ft) to Ghorepani (2,880m / 9,350ft)

After breakfast, we will continue our descent. The trail again goes through rhododendron grooves and passes through traditional villages, picturesque villages, and terrace farms. Similarly, we will also pass by small streams and waterfalls along the way. We will also cross a suspension bridge to reach Chittre village. From here, the trail joins the classic Annapurna Circuit Trek and ABC Trek trail. After trekking for a while, we will reach the beautiful Magar village of Ghorepani. The village offers a beautiful view of the Annapurna ranges, and we will rest here for the night.

Day 6 | Early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210m / 10,525ft), then trek to Birethanti (1,039m / 3,250ft) -Drive to Pokhara.

On this final trekking day, we will wake up early before dawn and begin our Poon Hill trek. This famous viewpoint is an hour’s hike from Ghorepani village. We will witness the breathtaking sunrise with snow-capped mountain vistas in the background. You can take pictures and enjoy the enchanting views. Then, we will slowly begin descending downhill.

We will return to Ghorepani andcontinue trekking to Birethanti. From here, we will catch a transport back to Pokhara via Nayapul. Our trek package will come to an end after we reach Pokhara. We hope your trekking experience with us was memorable. Thank you for choosing us!

Best Time for Khopra Danda Trek

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the best trekking seasons for the Khopra Danda Trek. The weather is slightly cold in early spring, and there can be light snowfall in higher regions. But it gradually becomes warmer and the days are warm and sunny. The daylight hours also become longer as the spring season progresses. Similarly, there is minimal rainfall, so the visibility is brilliant. The average temperature is around 5°C to 15°C. However, the nighttime temperature is slightly colder.

Another great thing about trekking in spring is that you will witness the entire rhododendron-filled trails in full bloom. The whole forest landscape of the Annapurna region comes alive with blooming rhododendrons, magnolias, and other wildflowers. Since you will be trekking within the Annapurna Conservation Area, you will see diverse flora and fauna. You might even catch sight of the red panda, Himalayan Tahr, musk deer, Himalayan monal, and more.

Autumn (September to November)

The peak trekking season in Nepal is autumn, the most favorable time for the Khopra Danda Trek. It has the most stable weather and mild temperatures. During autumn, the days are bright and sunny with crisp air. The average daytime temperature ranges around 20°C. However, the nights are usually cold and can drop to 5°C. The precipitation level is low, and there is minimal rainfall. Hence, there is no need to worry about muddy and wet trails. It has the most favorable trekking conditions among all the seasons.

Autumn is the best time to witness the crystal-clear views of the mountain panoramas. The sky is clear, and the visibility is excellent. The monsoons from the previous month cleanse the surrounding vegetation, leaving it fresh and vibrant. Moreover, the autumn foliage further enhances the beauty. The biggest festivals in Nepal, Dashain and Tihar, are celebrated in autumn. Hence, it is a rare chance to enjoy the festive atmosphere while enjoying the extraordinary trekking experience in Nepal.

Trek Route To Khopra Danda

The Khopra Danda Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu (1350 m) to Pokhara (850 m). You will then take another short drive from Pokhara to Ghandruk (1940 m) via Kimche. Ghandruk is the starting point of the trek. You will slowly trek past traditional Gurung villages with slate/ stone roofs, as well as Buddhist monasteries. Then, you will slowly ascend through rhododendron groves, passing by small waterfalls until you reach Tadapani (2700 m).

From Tadapani, you will trek past charming countryside and dense forests. Then, you will ascend gradually through rhododendron forests. En route, you will pass by a small clearing area known as Bayli Kharka (3450 m). The village offers a spectacular view of Mount Dhaulagiri. The trail from Bayli Kharka descends through subtropical forests to reach Chistibang pastures. Then, you will climb uphill through forests of conifers to reach Khopra Danda (3660 m). You can witness spectacular mountain views and the world’s deepest gorge, Kaligandaki Gorge.

You can take a short hike to Khayar Lake (4665 m), which takes around five hours to trek from Khopra Danda. Then, you will begin descending through the subtropical forest trail to Swanta village (2214 m). The downhill trail from Swanta continues through dense subtropical forests, traditional villages, and terrace farms. Similarly, you will cross a small river on a suspension bridge from where the trail joins the classic Annapurna Circuit trekking trail. You will then ascend towards Ghorepani (2880 m).

The Poon Hill Viewpoint (3210 m) lies within a short hiking distance from Ghorepani. You will take an early morning hike to the viewpoint to watch a beautiful sunrise with gorgeous mountain panoramas on the backdrop. After enjoying the breathtaking view, you will return to Ghorepani. Then, you will trek downhill towards Birethanti (1020 m). You will take a jeep from here and drive past Nayapul and then to Pokhara.

Food and Accommodation

The most standard accommodations along the Khopra Danda route include teahouses, lodges, and guesthouses. These stays are simple and only offer basic facilities with limited amenities. The trekking trails lie in a remote area, so you will not find luxurious hotels along the route. In lower regions like Ghorepani and Ghandruk, you may find standard lodges and guesthouses with single rooms and attached bathrooms.

As you climb to higher areas, the facilities become more basic and limited. Usually, the teahouses have rooms on a sharing basis with limited furniture. Similarly, some accommodations have dormitory-style rooms. They offer beds, mattresses, blankets, and pillows. The bathrooms are also mostly communal with Asian squat-style. There are no heating facilities in the rooms. Most accommodations have massive stone stoves in the middle of the dining room for heating purposes. You must pay an additional charge for services like internet, phone calls, heating facilities, hot showers, etc.

During the 6-day Khopra Danda Trek, you will get to try a variety of Nepalese local cuisines. Likewise, you will also find a variety of international cuisines on the menu. Some of the meal options that you will find during the trek include Dal Bhat (a staple Nepalese cuisine), Tibetan bread, momo (dumpling), noodles, thukpa, chow mein, roti, curry, salads, soups, pasta, stews, spaghetti, burgers, pizzas, etc. The drink options include tea (milk/ black/ green), coffee, cold drinks, and alcoholic beverages.

Yes, the Khopra Danda Trek is suitable for beginners. Its off-the-beaten-path trails are moderately challenging and ideal for all trekkers. Anyone with good health and fitness can undertake the trek. Thus, the trek is considered suitable for beginners. The trail has several steep ascending and descending sections. The average trekking time is between 4 and 6 hours per day. Hence, beginners must prepare physically and mentally for the Khopra Danda Trek.

Aside from the challenging trails and terrains, beginners must be aware of the high altitude, unpredictable weather, and other unforeseen circumstances. During the Khopra Danda Trek, they must ascend to an altitude above 3500 meters. There is minimal risk of altitude sickness, but trekkers must still take proper precautions.
