Nepal has returned to normal after the recent protests. Book your trek with confidence.
Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek is a unique journey that takes you to the beautiful Everest region of Nepal. Its serene, adventure trekking trails take you to the base camp of Mount Ama Dablam (4600 m). The trek is a great alternative to the commercialized and busy trails of Everest Base Camp.
Ama Dablam translates to “Mother Necklace” in the local Sherpa language. The mountain got its name from its beautiful shape and structure. The mountain’s long ridges resemble a mother’s arms protecting her children. Meanwhile, the glacier on the southwest of the mountain resembles a traditional double-pendant necklace worn by Sherpa women. It is also known as the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas” and sits at an altitude of 6812 meters. The trek is a wonderful opportunity to witness Mount Ama Dablam along with Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and more from a close range. Moreover, you will enjoy its exquisite trails within Sagarmatha National Park and explore the local Sherpa culture and traditions.
The trek follows the classic route to the Everest Base Camp. You will land at Tenzing Hillary Airport, Lukla, and begin your trek. The trekking trail goes through popular villages like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and more. Similarly, you will pass along the ancient Tengboche Monastery and several other monasteries and gompas. You will stay in small and cozy teahouses, experiencing the warm hospitality of the Sherpa people. The trek perfectly combines adventure and an enriching cultural experience. Discover the off-the-beaten and exotic trails and natural beauty of the Everest region with our 13-day Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek.
Your day begins with an early morning, scenic 30–40 minute flight from Kathmandu domestic terminal, or from Ramechhap (Manthali) during peak season, to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla. The best views are from the left side of the airplane, where you’ll see Gaurishankar, the Langtang range, the Dorje Lhakpa range, the Everest range, and even the Shishapangma range of China.
After landing, we usually do not start trekking immediately. We will meet our team, and if the flight arrives early, we will have breakfast; if it arrives later, we will have lunch. We will hold a short meeting with everyone involved in the trek to discuss the plan. After that, we begin our walk toward Phakding (2,610 m) by following the banks of the Dudh Koshi River.
Along the way, we complete the national park entry and local entry procedures. The region is mostly Buddhist, so you will see prayer flags, stone carvings, monasteries, and chortens (stupas).

Before reaching this point, we will stop at Monjo (2,835 m), the entry gate of Sagarmatha National Park, where our permits are checked. After Monjo, there is no more vegetable farmland, and the surroundings become more rugged.

Trek to Ama Dablam Base Camp is an extraordinary and moderately challenging venture. It requires reasonable health and fitness to conquer the challenging trails of Ama Dablam Base Camp. The journey begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. From Lukla, you will start your trek on varied trails on diverse terrains. You must hike uphill and downhill on steep and narrow pathways. Similarly, the terrain is rough and rocky, and you must cross several suspension bridges. The average trekking hours is 4 to 6 hours per day on average.
Aside from the challenging trails and terrains, the high altitude also makes the hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp a physically demanding trek. It exposes trekkers to the risk of altitude sickness. Trekkers can experience various symptoms, from mild to severe, which can even be fatal. Ascending to a higher altitude is also more physically strenuous. The weather also becomes more unstable and unpredictable at higher elevations. It can create further difficulties for trekkers.
The moderate trails of the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek do not require prior experience. They are suitable for all levels of trekkers, including beginners. However, all trekkers must make adequate physical and mental preparations. Acclimatization is also crucial during the trek. Hence, trekkers must also plan their itinerary carefully to meet their requirements and fitness requirements.
From March to May, the weather is clear, warm, and favorable for the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek. At the beginning of the spring season, it is a little chilly. You can see remnants of snow on the trails at higher elevations. The weather gradually becomes warmer, and the snow melts. The average temperature during spring ranges from 10 to 15°C. The days are longer in spring, and the daylight is longer. Hence, trekkers can enjoy trekking at their own pace.
Another great thing about trekking in spring is the active flora and fauna. The lower trails of Ama Dablam Base Camp pass through rhododendron forests, which are in full bloom during spring. Various other flowers also bloom in vibrant colors. This makes for a beautiful trek journey. There is lower rainfall, and the trails are dry. The clear skies provide spectacular mountain views without obstruction.
Autumn is the next best and peak trekking season for the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek. It has the best and most stable weather and climatic conditions for trekking. The skies are clear with crisp air. There is minimal rainfall, so the trails are dry, and visibility is extremely clear. The temperature during the daytime is around 15 to 20°C. However, the nights and mornings are a little chillier, and the temperature ranges from 5 to 10°C.
Autumn has the perfect weather for a comfortable trekking experience. It is also when the lush green vegetation transitions into red and brown. The stunning autumn foliage enhances the beauty of the entire Everest landscape. Nepal’s biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar, also fall at this time of the year. It further enriches your trekking experience. You can enjoy a festive atmosphere along with an adventurous trek.
Teahouses, lodges, and guesthouses are the standard accommodations available during the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek route. These accommodations also provide food and meals to the trekkers.
The Everest region falls in the remote area of the country. As a result, the accommodations offer only basic facilities and are affordable. There are a few luxurious stays at Namche Bazaar, but they are very expensive. The teahouses, lodges, and guesthouses offer their guests beds, mattresses, blankets, and pillows. The rooms are usually on a sharing basis or dormitory-style. In the lower region, you may find teahouses that provide single rooms with attached bathrooms. However, they are very rare. The higher you go, the more basic the facilities become.
During the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek, you need to maintain your stamina with healthy and nutritious meals. Dal Bhat is a basic staple meal that is readily available. It includes rice, lentil soup, curries, vegetables, pickles, and salad. This high-carb and protein-rich meal will keep you energized throughout the trek. You will also find many varieties of staple Nepalese as well as international cuisines.
Some other meals that are available during the trek include cornflakes, porridge, Tsampa, oatmeals, salad, soup, momo (dumpling), chow mein, thukpa, Sherpa stew, thenduk, Tibetan bread, roti, curries, sandwiches, fries, burgers, spaghetti, pasta, and more. For the drink option, you will find tea (black/ milk/ green), coffee, hot chocolate, soft drinks, juices, etc.
The HC Treks Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek package includes standard accommodation, meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and drinks (tea or coffee)
Teahouses provide basic rooms with twin beds, a foam mattress, and a blanket, though thin walls and unheated spaces mean you should bring a warm four-season sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C. The dining hall is the only heated area and becomes the evening gathering spot. Meals include dal bhat, soups, noodles, and simple vegetarian dishes, which are safer as meat is carried from lower villages. For drinking water, use purification tablets or filters, or buy boiled water to stay safe and reduce plastic waste.
Flights to Lukla have strict weight rules for safety, so you must pack carefully. Each trekker is allowed a total of 15 kg, with about 10 kg as checked luggage and 5 kg as hand carry. Extra weight is charged per kilogram, but space on the small aircraft is limited even if you pay. Most hotels in Kathmandu offer free storage, so leave anything non-essential behind before heading to the mountains.
Travel insurance is essential because the route reaches high altitudes and is far from medical help. Your policy must cover trekking up to at least 6,000 m, as many basic plans stop at 4,000–4,500 m. It should include helicopter evacuation, which can cost USD 4,000–5,000, plus full medical and hospital coverage for altitude sickness and injuries. Look for benefits like trip cancellation (useful for Lukla flight delays), lost baggage protection, and repatriation support.
A licensed guide is essential for your safety and navigation. They know the trails, monitor for altitude sickness, provide first aid, and coordinate emergency helicopter evacuations if needed. Guides also handle teahouse bookings, meals, and explain local culture. Porters carry your main luggage (usually 10–12.5 kg per person) and help secure accommodation ahead of you. Our team makes sure porters are properly paid, clothed, and not overloaded.
Packing the right gear is essential for a successful trek to the Everest region, and it is important to pack wisely. While the weather can vary and the terrain is challenging, you must bring only what’s necessary. It is recommended that you pack light, as you will need to carry your belongings long distances. A good rule of thumb is to keep your total pack weight under 10 kg (22 lbs). You can buy some items in Kathmandu or Namche Bazaar. Here is a recommended packing list:
