Kathmandu to Lukla Journey

Published:
Updated:

The journey from Kathmandu to Lukla is the gateway to Nepal’s Everest Region treks, including Everest Base Camp Trek, Gokyo Lakes, and the Three Passes Trek. Travelers can either take a direct mountain flight from Kathmandu or drive to Manthali (Ramechhap) and fly from there, depending on the trekking season. This short flight is often regarded as one of the most exciting air journeys in the world.

From the moment the plane lifts off and reaches closer to the Everest region, travelers will witness an aerial view of the Mahalangur Himalayan range and the Dudh Koshi River tributaries. As the plane descends towards Tenzing Hillary Airport, the landscape reveals Sherpa Villages such as Chaurikharka near Lukla. This Kathmandu to Lukla route delivers a combination of Himalayan beauties, cultural encounters, and natural wonders.

Seasonal Flight Operations: Kathmandu vs. Manthali (Ramechhap)

There are two main routes for flights to Lukla: from Kathmandu and from Manthali (Ramechhap). They were created mainly to manage air traffic and weather-related challenges during Nepal’s busy trekking seasons. For those seeking an alternative, there’s also a third option: a drive from Kathmandu to Salleri or Phaplu, followed by a multi-day trek to Lukla.

Direct Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla

kathmandu to lukla flight

The direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is the fastest and most convenient way to begin your Everest adventure. Available mainly during the off-peak trekking seasons of winter and monsoon. In just 40 minutes, travelers soar from the cityscape of Kathmandu to the Himalayan foothills, an instant transition that saves long road hours and maximizes trekking time.

Highlights:

  • Aerial views of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), Gauri Shankar (7,134 m), and Mount Everest (8,848.86 m).
  • Glimpses of the Rolwaling Valley, Lamjura Pass, and Dudh Koshi River.
  • Fly above beautiful villages like Jiri, Phaplu, and Namche’s outskirts.
  • No long road travel is involved; depart directly from Tribhuvan Domestic Airport to Tenzing Hillary Airport.

Tip: Early morning flights offer clearer skies and more reliable schedules.

Drive to Manthali (Ramechhap) and Fly to Lukla

Ramechhap airport

The drive to Manthali and flight to Lukla are used during the busiest trekking seasons: Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November), when thousands of trekkers head towards the Everest Region. To manage air traffic and early morning weather conditions, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal diverts all Lukla flights to Manthali Airport, located 132 km east of Kathmandu. The drive takes around 4 to 5 hrs, followed by a 20-minute scenic flight to Lukla.

Highlights:

  • A scenic drive along the Sun Koshi River and the terraced farmlands of Dhulikhel, Khurkot, and Manthali Valley.
  • Sky views of Numbur Himal (6,958 m) and Karyolung (6,511 m).
  • Lower flight delays to clearer morning skies in Manthali.

Tip: Leave Kathmandu around midnight or early morning to reach Manthali in time for your Lukla flight.

The Road Journey from Kathmandu to Manthali (Ramechhap)

The road journey from Kathmandu to Manthali passes through small countryside, valleys, and rural settlements before reaching the airstrip town of Ramechhap. Most trekkers choose an early morning drive, departing around 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM to catch the first flight to Lukla. The highway passes Bhaktapur, Banepa, Dhulikhel, Sindhuli, and some parts of the B.P. Highway. Though the drive takes 4 to 5 hrs, it’s a scenic prelude to the Himalayas.

For those who prefer a slower pace, an overnight stay in Manthali offers a more relaxed start. Several guesthouses and lodges near Manthali Airport provide comfortable stays before the morning flight. Travelers are advised to wear warm clothes, as early mornings in Ramechhap can be chilly from October to February. Keeping snacks, water, and motion sickness tablets handy is a smart move, as the roads can get bumpy at times.

The Scenic Flight Experience

The scenic flight from Manthali or Kathmandu to Lukla usually takes off early in the morning, around 6:00 to 9:00 AM, when the skies are clearest. Flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), meaning pilots must have good visibility to navigate safely. Because of this, flights only depart in clear weather. Several trusted domestic airlines such as Tara Air, Summit Air, Sita Air, and Guna Airlines operate daily services to Lukla using small aircraft like Twin Otters or Dornier 228s.

The ticket price ranges between USD 180 and 220 per person (one way), depending on the season and demand. From the window, travelers can spot the snow summits of Everest, Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), and Ama Dablam (6,812 m). Passengers are required to carry a valid passport and flight ticket for check-in, and baggage is limited to around 10-15 kg due to aircraft weight restrictions.

“An EBC Trek to Remember”

I went on the 17-day Everest Base Camp hike with HC Treks, and it was incredible! The trek was challenging but rewarding. The guides helped us adjust to the altitude and made sure we were always comfortable. I went with a small group, and we had a lot of fun, sharing stories along the way. The experience of standing at Everest Base Camp was emotional, and I’m so happy I did it!

The airstrip, officially known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport, is situated at 2,845 m, with a short 527-m runway. Highlights:

  • The runway helps planes slow down quickly upon landing.
  • Highly skilled pilots trained specifically for short takeoff and landing (STOL) operations in mountain conditions.
  • After landing, you’ll meet your guides, porters, and group members for introductions and briefings.
  • Early flights: Enjoy a warm group breakfast in Lukla before the trek.
  • Later flights: Have lunch and attend the trek briefing to discuss plans, routes, and safety measures.

Travel Tips for a Smooth Journey

  • Timing: Book an early morning flight for clearer weather and fewer chances of delays.

A fantastic and memorable experience that I would like to repeat in the not too distant future. My friend Kulvinder and I had discussed some time ago about doing a trek in Nepal. The lure of majestic mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and varied scenery finally drew us, along with another friend, Binesh, to embark on the Annapurna Trek with Tilicho Lake with Himalayan Challenge Treks. From the moment we were collected at the airport by our guide Chatur Man Tarang, to the end of the trek, we were not only provided with useful advice and information, but Chatur also infused the trek with his own special brand of humour. The two porters, 'Ashish' and 'Rajan', quickly became friends and helped fill in the quiet evenings by joining in a few games of Dhumble. The treks were challenging for us, 65+ year olds. Still, Chatur and the porters were always encouraging and provided helpful advice on how to deal with the various challenges of walking up and down safely, dealing with the low oxygen air at altitude, staying safe in rockfall areas, and dealing with the incoming traffic of ponies and local residents carrying bulky goods from one place to another. The locations were absolutely stunning and the local rambling through villages, visiting the Buddhist Stupas and Gumbas and enjoying the hospitality of the tea houses along the trek routes remains truly memorable. I hope to return sometime soon to pick up where we left this trek.

Day walk with Shirish Some time ago my wife and I did a short day walk with Shirish Tuladhar of Himalayan Challenge Treks and enjoyed the day immensely. We were in Katmandu for only about a week and so had no time for a multi-day trek. Shirish was a great guide and very patient (as I was recovering from surgery and moving rather slowly.) This was pre-Covid, while we were living in Malaysia, but while moving back to the US/EU I found Shirish's card and wanted to commend him and HCT. +David+

Fantastic Tailor Made Honeymoon After establishing an excellent connection with Shirish online, we worked to put together a bespoke itinerary which was absolutely perfect for what we wanted on our honeymoon. Shirish and his team (Ram and Raju) delivered a trip which far exceeded our expectations. Their local expertise provided a personal touch to our trip which made it incredibly special and unique. I thoroughly recommend Nepal as it has so much to offer visitors. We experienced white water rafting, trekking in the Annapurna foothills, sunrises over snow topped mountains, paragliding over Pokhara, safari in Chitwan, the history and culture of Kathmandu and much, much more. The Nepalese people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I put my trust in Shirish and his team and they delivered something professional, personal and so wonderfully memorable that the trip to Nepal will always have a very special place in our hearts.
