The drive to Manthali and flight to Lukla are used during the busiest trekking seasons: Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November), when thousands of trekkers head towards the Everest Region. To manage air traffic and early morning weather conditions, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal diverts all Lukla flights to Manthali Airport, located 132 km east of Kathmandu. The drive takes around 4 to 5 hrs, followed by a 20-minute scenic flight to Lukla.

Highlights:

  • A scenic drive along the Sun Koshi River and the terraced farmlands of Dhulikhel, Khurkot, and Manthali Valley.

The Road Journey from Kathmandu to Manthali (Ramechhap)

The road journey from Kathmandu to Manthali passes through small countryside, valleys, and rural settlements before reaching the airstrip town of Ramechhap. Most trekkers choose an early morning drive, departing around 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM to catch the first flight to Lukla. The highway passes Bhaktapur, Banepa, Dhulikhel, Sindhuli, and some parts of the B.P. Highway. Though the drive takes 4 to 5 hrs, it’s a scenic prelude to the Himalayas.

For those who prefer a slower pace, an overnight stay in Manthali offers a more relaxed start. Several guesthouses and lodges near Manthali Airport provide comfortable stays before the morning flight. Travelers are advised to wear warm clothes, as early mornings in Ramechhap can be chilly from October to February. Keeping snacks, water, and motion sickness tablets handy is a smart move, as the roads can get bumpy at times.

The Scenic Flight Experience

The scenic flight from Manthali or Kathmandu to Lukla usually takes off early in the morning, around 6:00 to 9:00 AM, when the skies are clearest. Flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), meaning pilots must have good visibility to navigate safely. Because of this, flights only depart in clear weather. Several trusted domestic airlines such as Tara Air, Summit Air, Sita Air, and Guna Airlines operate daily services to Lukla using small aircraft like Twin Otters or Dornier 228s.
