Trails from Machhermo to Gokyo Lake

Published:
Updated:

Planning for Gokyo Lake Trek? One of the significant villages you’ll reach along the trek is Machhermo, sitting at about 4,470 m. Machhermo is a key acclimatization spot where you can rest and adjust to the high altitude before heading to higher villages like Dole, Luza, and Gokyo. The village is home to Sherpa families who herd yaks and host trekkers along the trail.

But how long will it take to reach Gokyo Village from Machhermo, and what’s the Machhermo to Gokyo lake trail like? The trek is roughly 7 km and takes 4–5 hours for most people. Along the way, you’ll pass small Sherpa settlements and be treated to amazing views of Cho Oyu (8,188 m) and Gyachung Kang (7,952 m). The path is mostly moderate but has some narrow and rocky sections, and the weather can change quickly. Cold winds in spring and autumn, or snow in winter, can make the journey more challenging. With the right preparation and a knowledgeable guide, this stretch becomes a memorable and scenic adventure.

Trek Distance, Elevation Gain & Scenic Route to Gokyo Lakes

The Machhermo to Gokyo Lake covers about 7 km with an altitude gain of 300 m. While the distance may seem short, the high altitude makes it a challenging climb. The rocky paths, cold winds, and basic accommodations along the way can test your endurance. Despite the effort, the stunning views of Gokyo Valley and the surrounding peaks make every step worth it.

Is the Machhermo to Gokyo Lake Trek Difficult?

The Machhermo to Gokyo Lake route is a moderate-to-challenging high-altitude trekking section. The distance is relatively short, but the elevation is the main factor that makes this walk demanding. Machhermo is around 4,470 m, while Gokyo Village is around 4,750 m, giving the route an elevation gain of approximately 300 m.

The trail includes rocky and uneven sections, and the thin air can make even a gradual ascent feel strenuous. Trekkers should maintain a slow and steady pace, drink regularly, and avoid rushing simply because the distance appears manageable. Your previous acclimatization at lower villages such as Namche Bazaar and Machhermo is particularly important before continuing toward Gokyo.

Common signs of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness, and loss of appetite. If symptoms become serious or worsen, continuing higher is not advisable. A guide can help monitor your condition and make decisions about rest, descent, or medical assistance when necessary.

Quick tips for this section:

  • Walk slowly and maintain a comfortable rhythm.
  • Keep warm because exposed sections can be windy.
  • Drink enough water throughout the day.
  • Carry snacks that are easy to eat while walking.
  • Do not treat the short distance as a reason to rush.
  • Allow extra time if snow or poor weather affects trail conditions.

How Cho Oyu, Ngozumpa Glacier & Gokyo Lakes Make the Trek Worthwhile

Cho Oyu, Ngozumpa glacier, and Gokyo Lakes truly make the Gokyo Lake trek in the Everest region an amazing experience. Cho Oyu is the sixth highest montain in the world, standing at 8,188 m. Seeing its towering peak rise above the horizon is a surreal experience and a constant reminder of the majesty of the Himalayas.

Likewise, the Ngozumpa Glacier is the longest glacier in Nepal, stretching over 36 km. Walking alongside this massive river of ice, you can see its cracks, crevices, and frozen streams up close. It’s a dramatic landscape that makes you feel both tiny and amazed in the vastness of the mountains.

Finally, reaching the Gokyo Lakes is like stepping into a dream. The lakes shine in shades of turquoise and blue and reflect the surrounding snow-capped peaks. The largest lake, Gokyo Cho, is perfect for photos, relaxing, and enjoying the quiet beauty of the high Himalayas. These lakes are considered sacred by locals, adding a cultural and spiritual charm to the natural scenery.

“First Glimpse of Gokyo Lakes Still Stays With Me”

I’d heard whispers about the Gokyo Lakes, but let me tell you, seeing them in person? Absolutely unreal! This trek is so much more than just a path to Everest Base Camp. The route feels wilder and more remote, like you’ve stepped into a postcard. I went solo, thinking I’d just enjoy the solitude, but guess what? I ended up making lifelong friends in our group! There’s something about sharing those breathtaking views and challenging climbs that brings people together.

Our guide from HC Treks was a gem, he handled everything with this calm confidence that made us all feel safe, even when we were crossing the Cho La Pass. I mean, it can be a bit daunting, but with him leading the way, I felt like I could conquer anything! If you’re looking for an adventure that’s packed with stunning scenery and genuine connections, this is it. Trust me, you won’t just be checking off a bucket list item; you’ll be creating memories that’ll last a lifetime!

HC Treks made this feel like a journey, not just a tour. Our guide, Tashi, had this calm energy that made everyone feel safe and motivated. I was in a group with three others from the UK, and we quickly clicked. Gokyo Ri was the highlight. I literally cried when I saw Everest and the lakes beneath me. The experience gave me perspective I didn’t know I needed.

“Exploring Gokyo Trails with a Chill Guide”

We did this trek as a small group of four friends from college and wow, it absolutely blew us away. The Gokyo Lakes were unreal, like something out of a dream, and the climb to Gokyo Ri was totally worth the effort. EBC was the emotional peak for us, literally and figuratively. Our guide from HC Treks felt more like a travel buddy than a tour leader, always cracking jokes but also super knowledgeable. Every detail was smooth. Highly recommend doing it with people you care about.

Relax at Gokyo Village & Hike to Gokyo Ri

Gokyo Village, located at 4,750 m, is a peaceful stop on the way to Gokyo Ri Trek. The village is small but vibrant, with traditional stone houses and teahouses offering warm meals and rest. Trekkers often take this time to acclimatize, enjoy the view of the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and surrounding peaks like Nuptse, Pumori, Cholatse, Taboche, Kangtega, and Kongde Ri. The tranquil environment and high-altitude lakes make it a perfect stop to prepare before the next adventure to Gokyo Ri Trek.

The hike to Gokyo Ri is an important part of the trek for panoramic Himalayan views. Standing at 5,357 m, the summit offers Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu views. The climb takes 3-4 hours from Gokyo Village and is steep in sections. From the top, you can also see the Ngozumpa Glacier and the cluster of Gokyo Lakes below. This short but high-altitude hike is a key opportunity for altitude training, testing your stamina, and adjusting to thin air.

A fantastic and memorable experience that I would like to repeat in the not too distant future. My friend Kulvinder and I had discussed some time ago about doing a trek in Nepal. The lure of majestic mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and varied scenery finally drew us, along with another friend, Binesh, to embark on the Annapurna Trek with Tilicho Lake with Himalayan Challenge Treks. From the moment we were collected at the airport by our guide Chatur Man Tarang, to the end of the trek, we were not only provided with useful advice and information, but Chatur also infused the trek with his own special brand of humour. The two porters, 'Ashish' and 'Rajan', quickly became friends and helped fill in the quiet evenings by joining in a few games of Dhumble. The treks were challenging for us, 65+ year olds. Still, Chatur and the porters were always encouraging and provided helpful advice on how to deal with the various challenges of walking up and down safely, dealing with the low oxygen air at altitude, staying safe in rockfall areas, and dealing with the incoming traffic of ponies and local residents carrying bulky goods from one place to another. The locations were absolutely stunning and the local rambling through villages, visiting the Buddhist Stupas and Gumbas and enjoying the hospitality of the tea houses along the trek routes remains truly memorable. I hope to return sometime soon to pick up where we left this trek.

Day walk with Shirish Some time ago my wife and I did a short day walk with Shirish Tuladhar of Himalayan Challenge Treks and enjoyed the day immensely. We were in Katmandu for only about a week and so had no time for a multi-day trek. Shirish was a great guide and very patient (as I was recovering from surgery and moving rather slowly.) This was pre-Covid, while we were living in Malaysia, but while moving back to the US/EU I found Shirish's card and wanted to commend him and HCT. +David+

Fantastic Tailor Made Honeymoon After establishing an excellent connection with Shirish online, we worked to put together a bespoke itinerary which was absolutely perfect for what we wanted on our honeymoon. Shirish and his team (Ram and Raju) delivered a trip which far exceeded our expectations. Their local expertise provided a personal touch to our trip which made it incredibly special and unique. I thoroughly recommend Nepal as it has so much to offer visitors. We experienced white water rafting, trekking in the Annapurna foothills, sunrises over snow topped mountains, paragliding over Pokhara, safari in Chitwan, the history and culture of Kathmandu and much, much more. The Nepalese people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I put my trust in Shirish and his team and they delivered something professional, personal and so wonderfully memorable that the trip to Nepal will always have a very special place in our hearts.
