Namche Bazaar to Tengboche in Everest Region

Published:
Updated:

Namche Bazaar, “the gateway to Everest Base Camp Trek,” and Tengboche, home to the famous Tengboche Monastery, offer one of the most spiritual stops on the Everest Base Camp Trek. The trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche covers a total distance of 10 km and takes around 5-6 hrs. Starting from Namche Bazaar at an altitude of 3,440 m, you gradually ascend to Tengboche at 3,867 m, with a total altitude gain of 427m.

On the way from Namche to Tengboche, you’ll first pass Sanasa Village, known for its mani walls and local teahouses. The trail then descends into the Phunki Tenga, which offers panoramic views of Mount Everest and Ama Dablam. You’ll cross a suspension bridge over Dudh Koshi river and walk thorugh rhododendron and pine forest, gradually gaining altitude towards Tengboche.

Namche, the Sherpa Capital

Namche Bazaar is the largest settlement in the Khumbu region and serves as the commercial and cultural hub for the Sherpa community. The town has around 1,500 permanent residents and more than 50-100 lodges and teahouses, which makes it a central stop for trekkers heading to Everest Base Camp or Everest. Namche Bazaar markets are known for trading local goods like yak cheese, dried meat, and handwoven fabrics, as well as trekking gear imported from Kathmandu.

The town is built on a steep slope, with stone-paved streets connecting neighbourhoods like Tengboche Road, Chheplung, and Thamo. Namche also hosts the Sherpa Culture Museum, showcasing local history, traditional tools, and religious artifacts. Its daily life revolves around trade, tourism, and festivals such as Dumji (June) and Mani Rimdu (October/November). The town has basic health facilities, a post office, and schools, supporting both residents and trekkers. All of this makes it a commercial hub in Khumbu region.

Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar

During acclimatization in Namche Bazaar, trekkers rest and adjust to the altitude at 3,440 m while exploring the facilities of the town. You can visit local markets, teahouses, Everest View Photo Gallery, and Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Center for insights into the wildlife and mountaineering history of the region. Lodges provide hot meals and clean water, essential for recovery. Namche is a key stop on the Sagarmatha National Park trek where you can see mountains like Ama Dablam and Thamserku, and acclimate properly.

Side Hikes to Everest View Hotel and Khumjung Monastery

From Namche, trekkers can take short side hikes to the Everest View Hotel (3,962 m), which offers beautiful views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Another popular hike leads to Khumjung Monastery, a historic Buddhist site in the village of Khumjung, known for its sacred Yeti scalp and traditional Sherpa architecture. These hikes are short, taking around 1-2 hrs each way, and provide scenic Mount Everest viewpoints.

Tengboche Monastery and its Peaceful Surroundings

Tengboche lies at 3,867 m, on an open ridge that gives one of the best panoramic views in the Everest region. From here, you can see Everest (8,848.86 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), and Ama Dablam (6,812 m). The village itself is small, with only limited lodges, a bakery, and tea houses that serve hundreds of trekkers each season. Electricity comes from local hydro-power, and water is supplied by streams flowing down from nearby hills.

Tengboche Monastery

At the center of the village stands the Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region, built in 1916. The monastery celebrates the famous Mani Rimdu festival, celebrated by Sherpas every autumn. Inside, you’ll find ornate wall hangings, a 20-foot sculpture of Buddha, and the musical instruments and robes of the Lamas. The surroundings of the rhododendron and pine add natural beauty to the place, making Tengboche an important stop.

We were a small group of five, a mix of solo travelers and couples and by the end, it felt like we’d known each other for years. The trek was definitely a challenge (hello, Kala Patthar at sunrise!), but HC Treks prepared us so well. The altitude was manageable with the right guidance and rest. The guides and porters were absolute stars, always smiling and helping us stay positive.

“Balancing Challenge and Ease on Everest Trek”

I loved how this trek balanced adventure with comfort. Hiking to Everest Base Camp was exhilarating and sometimes challenging, but knowing we had a helicopter ride back made it feel accessible even for first-timers like me. Trekking with a group was so fun we all cheered each other on and shared stories by the fire at night. Big shoutout to HC Treks for organizing everything flawlessly and making the whole trip feel like a dream come true!

Pine Forests of Sherpa Villages, Kenjoma & Sanasa

During your Everest Base Camp hike, you’ll trek from Namche and move towards Kenjoma (3,550 m) and then Sanasa (3,600 m) to reach Tengboche. Kenjoma is a small settlement with a few teahouses and is also the junction for the route leading towards Gokyo. Sanasa is known for its mani walls and as a crossroads where trails from Khumjung, Gokyo, and Tengboche meet.

  • Duration: 1-2 hrs between Namche and Sanasa
  • Cost: Free to walk if you enter Namche legally
  • Scenery: Pine and rhododendron forests, Sherpa villages, prayer flags, mountain glimpses
  • Accessibility: Easy trail, accessible to all trekkers on the EBC route
  • Best For: Adventure lovers from age 16-65, suitable for couples, groups, and solo travelers

Passing through Phunki Tenga to Tengboche

Phunki Tenga

After leaving Sanasa, the trail descends to Phunki Tenga (3,250 m), a small settlement on the banks of the Dudh Koshi River. This village has a few tea houses and is used as a resting stop before the long climb to Tengboche. A suspension bridge crosses the river here, and a prayer wheel powered by water streams marks the path. From Phunki Tenga, you’ll climb through pine and rhododendron forest trails towards Tengboche (3,867 m). The ascent is challenging but rewards you with panoramic views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse.

A fantastic and memorable experience that I would like to repeat in the not too distant future. My friend Kulvinder and I had discussed some time ago about doing a trek in Nepal. The lure of majestic mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and varied scenery finally drew us, along with another friend, Binesh, to embark on the Annapurna Trek with Tilicho Lake with Himalayan Challenge Treks. From the moment we were collected at the airport by our guide Chatur Man Tarang, to the end of the trek, we were not only provided with useful advice and information, but Chatur also infused the trek with his own special brand of humour. The two porters, 'Ashish' and 'Rajan', quickly became friends and helped fill in the quiet evenings by joining in a few games of Dhumble. The treks were challenging for us, 65+ year olds. Still, Chatur and the porters were always encouraging and provided helpful advice on how to deal with the various challenges of walking up and down safely, dealing with the low oxygen air at altitude, staying safe in rockfall areas, and dealing with the incoming traffic of ponies and local residents carrying bulky goods from one place to another. The locations were absolutely stunning and the local rambling through villages, visiting the Buddhist Stupas and Gumbas and enjoying the hospitality of the tea houses along the trek routes remains truly memorable. I hope to return sometime soon to pick up where we left this trek.

Day walk with Shirish Some time ago my wife and I did a short day walk with Shirish Tuladhar of Himalayan Challenge Treks and enjoyed the day immensely. We were in Katmandu for only about a week and so had no time for a multi-day trek. Shirish was a great guide and very patient (as I was recovering from surgery and moving rather slowly.) This was pre-Covid, while we were living in Malaysia, but while moving back to the US/EU I found Shirish's card and wanted to commend him and HCT. +David+

Fantastic Tailor Made Honeymoon After establishing an excellent connection with Shirish online, we worked to put together a bespoke itinerary which was absolutely perfect for what we wanted on our honeymoon. Shirish and his team (Ram and Raju) delivered a trip which far exceeded our expectations. Their local expertise provided a personal touch to our trip which made it incredibly special and unique. I thoroughly recommend Nepal as it has so much to offer visitors. We experienced white water rafting, trekking in the Annapurna foothills, sunrises over snow topped mountains, paragliding over Pokhara, safari in Chitwan, the history and culture of Kathmandu and much, much more. The Nepalese people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I put my trust in Shirish and his team and they delivered something professional, personal and so wonderfully memorable that the trip to Nepal will always have a very special place in our hearts.
