Dole to Machhermo
They say the path from Dole to Machhermo is so full of twists and turns that even your backpack might get dizzy! The distance between Dole and Machhermo is about 7 km. Starting from Dole at 4,200 m, you climb slowly to Machhermo at 4,470 m. That’s a total elevation of 270 m. It usually takes around 4-5 hrs to complete this stretch, which takes you from rhododendron and juniper forests to more exposed, rugged terrain.
This section of the trek is full of surprises. You pass yak pastures at Lhafarma and Luza, small teahouses, and beautiful rhododendron forests. The atmosphere and panoramic views of Cho Oyu, Thamserku, Kangtega, and Taboche make each step worthwhile. It’s a moderate climb that offers you adventure and insights into local Everest culture.

Trek along Dudh Koshi Valley

The major highlight of this section is the Dudh Koshi Valley. It is a glacially formed area located in the central Everest region of Nepal. Its name translates to “Milky River” in Nepali, which originates from the glaciers of the Everest massif. As you trek along this valley, you can see the change in landscapes. As you leave Dole, the valley that has been enclosed by forests begins to open up into alpine meadows.
Yak Grazing Fields at Lhafarma and Luza
Grazing fields at Lhafarma and Luza are a special sight along the Machhermo route. These two places are not large, permanent villages like Namche Bazaar, but rather groups of stone huts used seasonally by yak herders. They serve as temporary homes for herders and storage points for their cheese, butter, and other products. You are likely to see herds of yaks and their hybrids (chauris) grazing in these vast, open pastures.
Beautiful Views of Ngozumpa Glacier and Cho Oyu Peaks

As you trek from Dole to Machhermo, you’ll encounter some of the first impressive views of the Ngozumpa Glacier and Cho Oyu peaks. As you approach Machhermo, you are moving closer to the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s longest glacier. On the trail, you’ll have your first view of Cho Oyu (8,188 m), the sixth-highest mountain in the world. As you ascend to Dudh Koshi Valley, the peaks appear prominently on the horizon.
Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) Post
The Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) Post near Machhermo is an important stop on the trail. It conducts daily afternoon lectures on the prevention, symptoms, and treatment of AMS, which is a life-saving practice for anyone venturing to high elevations. The post is staffed by experienced volunteers who monitor weather and health conditions. Visiting the HRA Post also offers a chance to learn about local rescue operations and mountain safety.
Arriving at Machhermo, the Gateway to Gokyo Lakes
Arriving at Machhermo feels like stepping into a peaceful mountain village. From Machhermo, it is a 7 km trek, a journey that takes approximately 4 to 5 hrs, to reach Gokyo Village. It is also the gateway to the Gokyo Ri trek, where adventure and Himalayan views truly begin.
Sunset and Starry Skies Over the Gokyo Valley

After a day of trekking in Machhermo, taking in the sunset and staying up for the starry skies in the Gokyo Valley is a beautiful experience. For a sunset view, make a 2 to 3 hr climb up Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) in the late afternoon. From the summit, you’ll be treated with stunning mountain views including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Also, due to the minimal light pollution in Sagarmatha National Park, the night sky is clear, which offers an ideal opportunity for stargazing and astrophotography.
