Gokyo to Thangnak

Gokyo to Thangnak

Ever wonder what it feels like to walk between two of the most beautiful villages of Everest: Gokyo and Thangnak? The trek from Gokyo to Thangnak is about 7 km long and takes 5 hrs to complete. This trek is a key stage on the Gokyo Lake trek for the trekkers who are willing to cross the Cho La Pass. You’ll start at Gokyo at 4,750 m and reach Thangnak at 4,700 m, losing a total of 50 m in altitude.

The trek involves crossing the Ngozumpa glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal. Although there is very little net altitude change, the climb to Gokyo Ri on the previous day, combined with the high altitude of the trek, means acclimatization is still crucial. So trekkers should walk slowly and stay hydrated.

Gokyo Village, The Starting Point of the High Himalayas

Gokyo Village is one of the highest settlements in Nepal, located on the eastern shore of the Dudh Pokhari, the third and largest of the Gokyo Lakes. It has fewer than 200 permanent residents, mostly Sherpas, and a smaller number of teahouses for trekkers. It is the perfect base for the Gokyo Lakes adventure. The village is also surrounded by four of the world’s tallest mountains: Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

Gokyo Village serves as a headquarters for further high-altitude exploration. Trails lead from Gokyo to Thangnak, Dole, and beyond, covering distances from 5 to 15 km per day depending on your route. Gokyo is also a key stop on the more adventurous Three Passes Trek, which involves crossing three high-altitude mountain passes-Cho La Pass, Renjo La Pass, and Kongma La Pass.

Scenic Trail from Gokyo to Thangnak

The hike from Gokyo to Thangnak is notable for its Himalayan and glacier scenery. Trekkers pass small teahouses, rocky ridges, and turquoise Gokyo lakes along the way. One highlight of this route is the Ngozumpa Glacier crossing. It gives a glimpse of the largest glacier in Nepal. The trek is a relatively short day’s walk, but it demands careful pacing and attention.

Passing the Turquoise Gokyo Lakes

As you leave Gokyo Village, the trail takes you past the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, a series of high-altitude freshwater lakes in the Everest region of Nepal. Located within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the lakes are fed by meltwater from the Ngozumpa Glacier. If you want clear views of Gokyo Lakes, the best time to trek Gokyo Lake is in spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sept–Nov). Walking along the lakes, you’ll notice the yak herders and the prayer flags fluttering in the wind. This section of the trail is relatively easy, so trekkers can pause, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere before the terrain rises towards Thangnak.

Crossing the Ngozumpa Glacier Lateral Moraine

Ngozumpa Glacier Lateral Moraine

Another beautiful part of the trail from Gokyo to Thangnak is the Ngozumpa Glacier lateral moraines, formed by centuries of glacial movement. The trek doesn’t involve walking on pure ice but rather on rocks and glacial debris that covers the ice below. The crossing is considered moderately difficult, so a guide is important for this section. From here, you can also spot the trails that lead towards the Everest Base Camp Trek

Three of us from Sydney decided to take on the Gokyo route to EBC and it was one of the best trips we’ve ever done. We wanted something a bit off the main path, and this was perfect. The views from Cho La Pass were wild, and our guide handled the tough terrain like a pro. The support from the porters and the warmth of the teahouses made even the cold nights feel comforting. Big thanks to HC Treks for making everything seamless.

Breathtaking Views from EBC

I set out on this adventure solo, but it didn’t take long for me to find my tribe with HC Treks. We bonded over steaming plates of Dal Bhat, tackled some seriously tough climbs, and soaked in views that felt like they were straight out of a postcard. Standing at Everest Base Camp with Gokyo glistening behind me was a moment I’ll never forget. It was like I’d conquered not just the mountain, but something deep within myself.

HC Treks really nailed the organization, everything from acclimatization to cozy tea house stays was spot on. If you’re looking for an adventure that’s as much about the journey as it is about the destination, trust me, you won’t want to miss this. Grab your gear, and let’s hit the trails together!

Approaching Thangnak and Settling In

After crossing the Ngozumpa Glacier, you’ll arrive at the small, remote settlement of Thangnak. This high-altitude hamlet is a perfect stop to rest, refuel, and prepare for the next day’s climb towards Chola Pass. Thangnak’s facilities are basic, as is common in remote, high-altitude villages. Teahouses provide simple, unheated rooms, a mattress, and a blanket. It’s highly recommended to use your own sleeping bag for extra warmth and hygiene.

Exploring Sherpa Villages and Mani Walls

Thangnak is home to only a few teahouses and families who live here seasonally. The village reflects the Sherpa culture in the Khumbu region. You’ll find small ancient stone houses and mani walls that reflect the Tibetan Buddhist heritage of the Khumbu region. The carved stones contain prayers and mantras, which are believed to provide blessings and protection to travelers. Trekkers are requested to pass mani walls on the left, which follow the clockwise direction of the earth’s revolution in Buddhist cosmology.
