Namche, the Sherpa Capital
Namche Bazaar is the largest settlement in the Khumbu region and serves as the commercial and cultural hub for the Sherpa community. The town has around 1,500 permanent residents and more than 50-100 lodges and teahouses, which makes it a central stop for trekkers heading to Everest Base Camp or Everest. Namche Bazaar markets are known for trading local goods like yak cheese, dried meat, and handwoven fabrics, as well as trekking gear imported from Kathmandu.

The town is built on a steep slope, with stone-paved streets connecting neighbourhoods like Tengboche Road, Chheplung, and Thamo. Namche also hosts the Sherpa Culture Museum, showcasing local history, traditional tools, and religious artifacts. Its daily life revolves around trade, tourism, and festivals such as Dumji (June) and Mani Rimdu (October/November). The town has basic health facilities, a post office, and schools, supporting both residents and trekkers. All of this makes it a commercial hub in Khumbu region.

You can visit local markets, teahouses, Everest View Photo Gallery, and Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Center for insights into the wildlife and mountaineering history of the region. Lodges provide hot meals and clean water, essential for recovery. Electricity comes from local hydro-power, and water is supplied by streams flowing down from nearby hills.

At the center of the village stands the Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region, built in 1916. The monastery celebrates the famous Mani Rimdu festival, celebrated by Sherpas every autumn. Inside, you’ll find ornate wall hangings, a 20-foot sculpture of Buddha, and the musical instruments and robes of the Lamas. The surroundings of the rhododendron and pine add natural beauty to the place, making Tengboche an important stop.
