They say the journey matters more than the destination-clearly, they’ve never been on the road from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. The journey covers 170 km of hills and narrow roads that feel like a rollercoaster designed by nature. Kathmandu sits at an altitude of 1,400 m, while Machha Khola is around 730 m an elevation loss of roughly 590 m. Yet, the route feels anything but downhill.

It takes 8 to 9 hrs to reach Machha Khola, depending on road conditions, traffic, and the experience of your driver. The path crosses the Trishuli River, the Budhi Gandaki River, Daraudi River, and small towns like Dhading Besi, Malekhu, Arughat, and Soti Khola. Despite the bumps, every twist and turn brings a new view of the Ganesh Himal range and Mount Manaslu. It’s not just a drive, it’s the opening scene of your Manaslu Circuit Trek and Manaslu Tsum Valley trek.

How To Reach Machha Khola From Kathmandu

Reaching Machha Khola from Kathmandu, the Manaslu Trek starting point, is an adventure in itself. While a private jeep offers the most comfort and flexibility, perfect for groups or those short on time. Let’s discuss some in brief.

Experiencing the Journey by Local Bus

I’d done a couple of treks in Nepal before, but Manaslu? This one hits differently, it’s wilder, less crowded, and feels like you’re walking through a forgotten world. Every day brought something unexpected swinging bridges, Buddhist monasteries, yak herds, and those towering snowy peaks. The HC Treks team was brilliant, so organized yet super chill. I was solo, but never felt alone. Honestly, it’s a trek that stays with you.

We were a group of four friends from Sydney looking for something different than the usual Everest or Annapurna treks and wow, did Manaslu Tsum Valley blow us away. It was raw, untouched, and deeply spiritual. We trekked through ancient villages, laughed around dinner tables, and bonded with our guide like he was one of us. HC Treks gave us the perfect mix of challenge, care, and connection. We’re already planning another trek with them!

Passing Through Arughat and Experiencing Local Culture

Arughat

After crossing the rivers, the road takes you through Arughat, a key transit point for the Manaslu region. The area around Arughat is inhabited by ethnic groups, particularly the Gurung, Magar, and Tibetan-Himalayan communities. You’ll also witness the brilliant recovery of this village, which was once destroyed by the devastating earthquake in 2015. For trekkers, Arughat is a chance to stretch, enjoy local snacks, and admire the atmosphere before continuing towards Himalayan trails.

Crossing Soti Khola Suspension Bridges & Lush Forests

Soti Khola Suspension Bridges

As the road approaches Machha Khola, you’ll cross the Soti Khola Suspension Bridge, one of the key highlights of the journey. Located at an altitude of around 710 m, this bridge spans the Budhi Gandaki River, leading towards Khorla Besi. Above the bridge, the dense forest of sal, bamboo, and rhododendron creates a cool, shaded atmosphere. These green forests are home to various birds and wildlife. This area also marks the transition point into the Manaslu Conservation Area and the starting point of the Manaslu trek.

Reaching Machha Khola and Settling into First Stop

After several hours of mountain roads and scenic stops, you’ll reach Machha Khola, a riverside village in the Gorkha District of Nepal. It lies along the banks of the Budhi Gandaki River. The name “Machha Khola” means Fish River in Nepali, named after the once-abundant fish population of the river. The village is small, with stone houses, terraced farms, and teahouses built to welcome trekkers starting or ending their Manaslu journey.

machha khola settlements

Settling into Machha Khola feels like stepping into the heart of the Himalayas. Most trekkers spend a night here to rest, adjust, and prepare for the trails ahead towards Jagat and Deng. The temperature stays mild around 20-25°C in spring and 10-15°C in autumn, perfect for an evening stroll around the village. Teahouses offer simple meals like dal bhat, noodles, and momos, freshly cooked over wood stoves. Overall, Machha Khola is a perfect stop for your journey.

A fantastic and memorable experience that I would like to repeat in the not too distant future. My friend Kulvinder and I had discussed some time ago about doing a trek in Nepal. The lure of majestic mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and varied scenery finally drew us, along with another friend, Binesh, to embark on the Annapurna Trek with Tilicho Lake with Himalayan Challenge Treks. From the moment we were collected at the airport by our guide Chatur Man Tarang, to the end of the trek, we were not only provided with useful advice and information, but Chatur also infused the trek with his own special brand of humour. The two porters, 'Ashish' and 'Rajan', quickly became friends and helped fill in the quiet evenings by joining in a few games of Dhumble. The treks were challenging for us, 65+ year olds. Still, Chatur and the porters were always encouraging and provided helpful advice on how to deal with the various challenges of walking up and down safely, dealing with the low oxygen air at altitude, staying safe in rockfall areas, and dealing with the incoming traffic of ponies and local residents carrying bulky goods from one place to another. The locations were absolutely stunning and the local rambling through villages, visiting the Buddhist Stupas and Gumbas and enjoying the hospitality of the tea houses along the trek routes remains truly memorable. I hope to return sometime soon to pick up where we left this trek.

Day walk with Shirish Some time ago my wife and I did a short day walk with Shirish Tuladhar of Himalayan Challenge Treks and enjoyed the day immensely. We were in Katmandu for only about a week and so had no time for a multi-day trek. Shirish was a great guide and very patient (as I was recovering from surgery and moving rather slowly.) This was pre-Covid, while we were living in Malaysia, but while moving back to the US/EU I found Shirish's card and wanted to commend him and HCT. +David+

Fantastic Tailor Made Honeymoon After establishing an excellent connection with Shirish online, we worked to put together a bespoke itinerary which was absolutely perfect for what we wanted on our honeymoon. Shirish and his team (Ram and Raju) delivered a trip which far exceeded our expectations. Their local expertise provided a personal touch to our trip which made it incredibly special and unique. I thoroughly recommend Nepal as it has so much to offer visitors. We experienced white water rafting, trekking in the Annapurna foothills, sunrises over snow topped mountains, paragliding over Pokhara, safari in Chitwan, the history and culture of Kathmandu and much, much more. The Nepalese people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I put my trust in Shirish and his team and they delivered something professional, personal and so wonderfully memorable that the trip to Nepal will always have a very special place in our hearts.
