Deng to Namrung

Updated:

The journey from Deng to Namrung may be challenging, but every step is worth the view. After completing the Jagat to Deng stretch, trekkers often feel more prepared for this rewarding section. Deng sits at an elevation of 1,860 m, while Namrung rises to 2,630 m, giving trekkers a total elevation gain of 770 m. This 13 km journey takes roughly 5-6 hrs, depending on your speed. You’ll pass Bihi Phedi, Nubri Valley, and Ghap, each offering glimpses of Tamang culture and mountains like Manaslu (8,163 m), Himalchuli (7,893 m), and Ngadi Chuli / Peak 29 (7,871 m).

The trail from Deng to Namrung is not just about the numbers; it’s a journey filled with joy and adventure. You’ll follow the Budhi Gandaki River upstream and cross bamboo, rhododendron, fir, and pine forest, which becomes denser as you gain altitude. By the time you reach Namrung, you’ll experience Tibetan Buddhist Culture, where you can see mani prayer stones and walls.

Deng to Namrung Route & Highlights

The trail from Deng to Namrung is one of the most scenic parts of the Tsum Valley Trek and Manaslu Circuit Trek. You’ll get glimpses of peaks like Shringi Himal (7,161m), and after Namrung, Kutung Himal and the Manaslu range start to appear. Here are some highlights you’ll come across along the route.

Crossing the Budhi Gandaki River Bridge

Budhi Gandaki River on the way to deng to namrung

The trek between Deng and Namrung involves several key crossings of the Budhi Gandaki River. This river is around 118 km long, flowing from the Manaslu Glacier before meeting the Trishuli River. The bridges over the river are common in the region: long, narrow metal structures with wooden plank bases, often adorned with colorful Buddhist prayer flags. As you walk across, you’ll hear the thunder of the river below and see crystal blue colours cutting steep rock walls.

Climb to Bihi Phedi & Ghap

After crossing the Budhi Gandaki River, the trail climbs to Bihi Phedi (2,130 m) and then continues towards Ghap (2,160 m). The name “Bihi Phedi” means “base of Bihi“, as it lies below the larger Bihi Village. It takes around 1 to 2.5 hrs to reach Bihi Phedi from Deng. The area is home to the Gurung and Tibetan communities, where mani walls and chortens mark the Buddhist culture. Continuing to Ghap takes 1.5 hrs, where the trail follows stone steps and a suspension bridge. Ghap is known for its ancient mani stones and colorful prayer wheels, believed to date back several centuries.

Capturing views of Shringi and the Kutung Himal

During the Deng to Namrung trek, trekkers can witness Shringi Himal (7,187 m) and Kutung Himal (6,064 m)-two major peaks seen on the northern skyline. Shringi Himal, also known as Chhuling Himal, rises above the Budhi Gandaki Valley and holds spiritual value for Gurung and Tibetan communities. To its east stands Kutung Himal, a lesser-known but beautiful peak that forms part of the border between the Gorkha and Tibet. The sight of Shringi and Kutung Himal together creates one of the most beautiful moments on the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Arriving in Namrung and Experiencing Local Culture, Cafes & Mountain Views

Reaching Namrung feels like stepping into a hidden mountain village. Stone houses, prayer flags, and locals welcome every tired trekker. Here, you can sip coffee in cafes, chat with locals, and observe the snow peaks shining above the rooftops.

First Glimpse of the Manaslu Region Peaks from Namrung

manaslu view from namrung village

From Namrung, trekkers get their first clear glimpse of the Manaslu region peaks. Standing at 2,630 m, Namrung offers panoramic views of Manaslu North (7,157 m), Naike Peak (6,845 m), and Himalchuli. These peaks belong to the Mansiri Himal subrange of the Himalayas, formed millions of years ago through the uplift of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Early in the morning, the mountain glows in golden light, while in the evening, they turns pink as the sun sets. Many trekkers pause here for photos or tea breaks, to admire this beauty.

I’d done a couple of treks in Nepal before, but Manaslu? This one hits differently, it’s wilder, less crowded, and feels like you’re walking through a forgotten world. Every day brought something unexpected swinging bridges, Buddhist monasteries, yak herds, and those towering snowy peaks. The HC Treks team was brilliant, so organized yet super chill. I was solo, but never felt alone. Honestly, it’s a trek that stays with you.

“The Untouched Beauty of Manaslu Revealed on This Journey”

Wow, where do I even start? This trek was a game-changer for me! High altitudes, long days filled with adventure, and those remote paths that make you feel like you’re on top of the world. I signed up for a challenge, and boy, did I get one! I joined a small group of five, and we quickly became like a little mountain family. There’s something about sharing the struggle of steep climbs and breathtaking views that just brings people together.

Let’s talk about the crew, our guides were incredibly patient, always ready with a smile and a story to keep our spirits high. And the porters? Absolute legends! They carried our gear with such ease, making it look like a walk in the park while we were huffing and puffing. But the real star of the show? The views! Seriously, Manaslu doesn’t get the hype it deserves.

The trails were quiet, the beauty was dramatic, and every turn felt like a postcard moment.Hats off to HC Treks for making this whole experience seamless. From the planning to the execution, everything was spot on. If you’re looking for an adventure that’s off the beaten path, trust me, Manaslu is where it’s at. You won’t just trek; you’ll create memories that’ll last a lifetime!

Interacting with Friendly Villagers and Sherpa Life

Namrung is not just about mountain views-it’s about meeting the people who call these hills home. The Sherpa and Gurung villagers here are known for their hospitality and friendliness. A simple greeting like “Tashi Delek” (which means “Good luck” or “Blessings” in Sherpa) brings a smile, and you can reply with the same words. Most families in Namrung live a life based on farming, yak herding, and running small teahouses for trekkers. You can interact easily by showing interest in their daily life, asking about their crops, their yaks, or how they prepare butter tea and tsampa (a roasted barley meal).

A fantastic and memorable experience that I would like to repeat in the not too distant future. My friend Kulvinder and I had discussed some time ago about doing a trek in Nepal. The lure of majestic mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and varied scenery finally drew us, along with another friend, Binesh, to embark on the Annapurna Trek with Tilicho Lake with Himalayan Challenge Treks. From the moment we were collected at the airport by our guide Chatur Man Tarang, to the end of the trek, we were not only provided with useful advice and information, but Chatur also infused the trek with his own special brand of humour. The two porters, 'Ashish' and 'Rajan', quickly became friends and helped fill in the quiet evenings by joining in a few games of Dhumble. The treks were challenging for us, 65+ year olds. Still, Chatur and the porters were always encouraging and provided helpful advice on how to deal with the various challenges of walking up and down safely, dealing with the low oxygen air at altitude, staying safe in rockfall areas, and dealing with the incoming traffic of ponies and local residents carrying bulky goods from one place to another. The locations were absolutely stunning and the local rambling through villages, visiting the Buddhist Stupas and Gumbas and enjoying the hospitality of the tea houses along the trek routes remains truly memorable. I hope to return sometime soon to pick up where we left this trek.

Day walk with Shirish Some time ago my wife and I did a short day walk with Shirish Tuladhar of Himalayan Challenge Treks and enjoyed the day immensely. We were in Katmandu for only about a week and so had no time for a multi-day trek. Shirish was a great guide and very patient (as I was recovering from surgery and moving rather slowly.) This was pre-Covid, while we were living in Malaysia, but while moving back to the US/EU I found Shirish's card and wanted to commend him and HCT. +David+

Fantastic Tailor Made Honeymoon After establishing an excellent connection with Shirish online, we worked to put together a bespoke itinerary which was absolutely perfect for what we wanted on our honeymoon. Shirish and his team (Ram and Raju) delivered a trip which far exceeded our expectations. Their local expertise provided a personal touch to our trip which made it incredibly special and unique. I thoroughly recommend Nepal as it has so much to offer visitors. We experienced white water rafting, trekking in the Annapurna foothills, sunrises over snow topped mountains, paragliding over Pokhara, safari in Chitwan, the history and culture of Kathmandu and much, much more. The Nepalese people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I put my trust in Shirish and his team and they delivered something professional, personal and so wonderfully memorable that the trip to Nepal will always have a very special place in our hearts.
