Journey Through Samagaun to Manaslu Base Camp

Updated:

Follow the trails less traveled and discover the hidden beauty of Nepal on your trek through Samagaun to Manaslu Base Camp. From Samagaun (3,530 m), the journey to Manaslu Base Camp (4,560 m) is spectacular, with a total elevation gain of 1,030 m. This70 km journey takes 6-9 hrs, which gives you enough time to adjust to the altitude and enjoy the views without rushing, especially for trekkers considering the Manaslu trek without guide for a more independent experience.

On the way, you’ll pass several beautiful villages like Jagat, Namrung, and Shyala. You’ll cross several suspension bridges over the Budhi Gandaki River, pass through lush forests, and alpine meadows. You’ll witness Samagaun Monastery, scenic viewpoints, and the massive peaks of the Manaslu range. Let’s take a brief look at them.

Samagaun

Samagaun is the gateway village to the Manaslu Base Camp, located in the Gorkha district of northern-central Nepal. Stone-built houses, fields of golden buckwheat, and women weaving colorful traditional clothes give it a timeless Himalayan feel. It is primarily inhabited by people of Tibetan origin (Nubri people). It’s a very exciting and active village where your high-altitude adventure truly begins.

  • Altitude: 3,530 m
  • Best Stay: Teahouses or small lodges in the village center
  • Local Cuisine: Dal Bhat, Tibetan bread, local noodles, and fresh yak cheese
  • Acclimatization Tips: Rest well, drink lemon water, take short walks, and avoid strenuous exertion on the first day
  • Nearby Attractions: Samagaun Monastery, Budhi Gandaki River Viewpoints, Buddhist shrines, Pungyen Gompa, Birendra Lake
  • Connectivity: Limited mobile network, basic internet available at some lodges

Walking through Stone Villages and Mani Walls

Walking in Samagaun feels like stepping back in time. The village is made of traditional stone houses, some over 100 years old, built with slate stones and wooden beams that have stood strong against harsh Himalayan weather. As you explore it around, you’ll see rows of mani walls. They are engraved with Buddhist prayers and mantras, mostly “Om Mani Padme Hum“. This area reflects the deep Tibetan Buddhist culture practices.

Crossing Alpine Meadows with Grazing Yaks

Traversing the alpine meadows near Samagaun is a peaceful experience. These high-altitude meadows are covered with short grasses, wildflowers, and hardy plants that survive the cold Himalayan climate. Yaks graze here freely, mostly eating the tender grasses, herbs, and shrubs found across the slopes. The sight of grazing yaks against a setting of snow-capped peaks creates a beautiful Himalayan atmosphere.

Visiting Pungyen Gompa with Mountain Backdrop

Pungyen Monastery on the way to samagaun to manaslu base camp

Visiting Pungyen Gompa near Samagaun is a spiritual highlight of the trek. This monastery was established in the 18th century and serves as an important center for the Buddhist community. Inside, you’ll find prayer halls, colorful murals, sacred statues, and rows of spinning prayer wheels. The gompa is framed by Mount Manaslu (8,163 m) and Himalchuli (7,893 m), which creates a serene backdrop. Standing here, you can feel the spirit and the beauty of the high Himalayas.

Reaching Manaslu Base Camp by Passing Birendra Lake

The hike to Manaslu Base Camp is a significant part of the acclimatization process. Reaching Manaslu Base Camp is the ultimate reward after passing the Birendra Lake at 4,200 m. The lake appears just before the final ascent to the base camp. From here, trekkers continue to Manaslu Base Camp at 4,560 m. It is surrounded by Manaslu, Himalchuli, and Ngadi Chuli (7,871 m). During the trekking season, expedition tents cover the base camp, and climbers prepare for their ascent. These views create a perfect high-altitude panorama.

I’d done a couple of treks in Nepal before, but Manaslu? This one hits differently, it’s wilder, less crowded, and feels like you’re walking through a forgotten world. Every day brought something unexpected swinging bridges, Buddhist monasteries, yak herds, and those towering snowy peaks. The HC Treks team was brilliant, so organized yet super chill. I was solo, but never felt alone. Honestly, it’s a trek that stays with you.

“Manaslu’s Secret Tea Houses and Sunrise Moments”

Manaslu Circuit isn’t just a trek, it’s a full-blown love affair with the Himalayas! HC Treks crafted this 16-day adventure that had me pinching myself daily whether it was watching sunrise paint the snow-capped peaks pink or sharing tea with locals in villages where time moves differently. Their local guides knew every hidden viewpoint and the perfect tea houses (that yak butter tea grows on you, I swear!). What I loved? Being able to set my own rhythm without missing any jaw-dropping moments.

The real magic? How this trek balances challenge with pure awe. One minute you’re catching your breath at 5,100m, next you’re laughing with your guide about the snoring yaks outside your tea house. HC Treks  team handled everything from surprise snowfall to finding hidden hot springs, letting me just soak up Nepal’s raw beauty.

“From Villages to Mountains on Manaslu”

My best friend and I decided to take on the Manaslu Circuit as our post-grad trip, and what an adventure! We didn’t want something overly touristy, this was exactly what we hoped for: rugged, peaceful, and real. The landscapes changed so much along the way, and we learned so much from our guide about the culture and traditions. HC Treks took care of everything. It felt like we were in safe hands the whole time, even when crossing Larke Pass!

A fantastic and memorable experience that I would like to repeat in the not too distant future. My friend Kulvinder and I had discussed some time ago about doing a trek in Nepal. The lure of majestic mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and varied scenery finally drew us, along with another friend, Binesh, to embark on the Annapurna Trek with Tilicho Lake with Himalayan Challenge Treks. From the moment we were collected at the airport by our guide Chatur Man Tarang, to the end of the trek, we were not only provided with useful advice and information, but Chatur also infused the trek with his own special brand of humour. The two porters, 'Ashish' and 'Rajan', quickly became friends and helped fill in the quiet evenings by joining in a few games of Dhumble. The treks were challenging for us, 65+ year olds. Still, Chatur and the porters were always encouraging and provided helpful advice on how to deal with the various challenges of walking up and down safely, dealing with the low oxygen air at altitude, staying safe in rockfall areas, and dealing with the incoming traffic of ponies and local residents carrying bulky goods from one place to another. The locations were absolutely stunning and the local rambling through villages, visiting the Buddhist Stupas and Gumbas and enjoying the hospitality of the tea houses along the trek routes remains truly memorable. I hope to return sometime soon to pick up where we left this trek.

Day walk with Shirish Some time ago my wife and I did a short day walk with Shirish Tuladhar of Himalayan Challenge Treks and enjoyed the day immensely. We were in Katmandu for only about a week and so had no time for a multi-day trek. Shirish was a great guide and very patient (as I was recovering from surgery and moving rather slowly.) This was pre-Covid, while we were living in Malaysia, but while moving back to the US/EU I found Shirish's card and wanted to commend him and HCT. +David+

Fantastic Tailor Made Honeymoon After establishing an excellent connection with Shirish online, we worked to put together a bespoke itinerary which was absolutely perfect for what we wanted on our honeymoon. Shirish and his team (Ram and Raju) delivered a trip which far exceeded our expectations. Their local expertise provided a personal touch to our trip which made it incredibly special and unique. I thoroughly recommend Nepal as it has so much to offer visitors. We experienced white water rafting, trekking in the Annapurna foothills, sunrises over snow topped mountains, paragliding over Pokhara, safari in Chitwan, the history and culture of Kathmandu and much, much more. The Nepalese people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I put my trust in Shirish and his team and they delivered something professional, personal and so wonderfully memorable that the trip to Nepal will always have a very special place in our hearts.
